Unlike Zellers, which always looked like a bomb just went off, Target is immaculate. I was there last night and the staff outnumbered the customers. Not a single item was askew or out of place. A couple of small sections were roped off and it looked like some areas like kids clothing had been downsized but nothing drastic. I just couldn't help thinking was a colossal waste this all was. I was getting depressed just thinking about it. It's so much fresher, brighter and more attractive than Zellers ever hoped to be. The store is practically brand new. And now it's all going to be torn apart.

Well said, Rob.

Yes it looks nice and polished with nothing out of place, except a shortage of socks.

Yeah, it's too bad they couldn't make it work. Supply chains in this country are an entirely different beast than what they were used to.

Up to 30% off, but not on everything and really there isn't much of a deal to be had.  It is sad to see an otherwise successful company completely botch this badly.

I'm sure the discounts will increase as the death throes speed up and the stock depletes.

Then why scale up so fast?  Slow down, get the supply chain working before you keep opening up more stores in such a tight time frame.  Their fault was letting customers twice go unstocked stores, and now they never get those customers to come back, even as they fix the supply chain.

I assume they didn't think they would face such drastic supply issues and could operate that many stores right off the bat. The problem was they assumed all of those leases and I guess they wanted to start earning revenue rather than phase in store openings.

The most intriguing thing I heard a media analyst say is that Target ignored Zellers'buying history--the complete store-by-store record of every item--what sells fastest, what needs to be restocked most frequently, what the top sellers are in different geographical regions--all that priceless data was thrown away and Target instead built up everything from scratch.

I can't help but think each store needed an old-timer, a Zellers lifer working the phones. Sock department empty? Call Morty. And Morty would get on the phone to his old pal at MacGregor's who, after some chit chat about the wife and kids, pulls some strings makes a few calls and next thing you know a case of socks is on the way--just enough to tide you over until the next shipment comes.

That might be a Canadian way of doing business but a giant American retailer would shriek at the prospect of Morty doing any such thing. They likely threw away Zellers sales records because they must have looked like an amateur put them together.

Doing business in this country is difficult at the best of times. You only appreciate the US way of turning a profit when you sit down with American stock buyers and push a product. In my experience it'll take an American buyer 30 seconds to determine whether or not the product has merit and how much to order and where it'll fit into the grand scheme of things. A Canadian buyer will take two weeks to make a decision and then fail miserably at staging the product. It's infuriating.

From CBC's On The Island:

TARGET CLOSING |

While some bargain hunters might be pleased, it's not a happy time for thousands of Target employees.

Here's a message we received from one Target employee who we agreed not to identify (because of the non-disclosure agreement they have to sign):

"If you could pass on one thing to your listeners, I'm sure my fellow bottom-rung employees would sure appreciate it: Target employees has ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL over the pricing or price changes that are coming to the stores as part of the liquidation process! I can't stress this enough.

Please, please remind your listeners to be decent human-beings while shopping at Target. We're people too, [and] we want to be treated like it. We're under a lot of stress already."

Right on...during WW I the Red Cross had volunteers knitting socks for the troops overseas.

I think that group... if they are still around, would be happy to pitch in again.

Lousy Target can't even do a good job of a liquidation sale. At this rate they won't last long.

If they don't need to liquidate overnight why price it that way? No need for 70% off until it's absolutely necessary.

Plus, Target probably wants to preserve its good name in the States by avoiding the undignified spectacle of carnage produced by a blow-out sale of below-cost products. They are counting on us returning to our old habits of cross-border shopping at American Targets. But for now they have to find the balance between pricing that's too high and too low.

^ Probably.  But it's not like US consumers know anything of this failure, unless they read very deep into the business pages every day.  They do not need to protect their name for US customers.

First of all, anyone running a sale in Victoria knows that the word sale alone is enough to line up buyers.

Secondly, this is exactly what Zellers did when they liquidated. They started off with small discounts which grew over time.

And modeling one's business strategies after Zeller's is to be commended how?

No, I think Target is thinking of its Canadian reputation. They don't want Canadians' final memory of Target being of a chaotic gong show. They want to preserve as much of the positive impressions of Target that existed before the disastrous Canadian experiment.

Ha! That's a joke, son!
