This thread has run its course.
The mods have had a discussion regarding the future of the TC thread. Stand by for an announcement.

We'll be starting a new TC thread very soon. It won't disappear, it'll just have a new tone slightly. We've decided to take a slightly different, more conciliatory approach (from the moderators at least) with news outlets that might also cover local topics the way we do.

I realize this thread is locked, but it's only fair to respond.Dude - are you even following what's happening to newspapers? First you're mocking the local paper, then you're chiding it for not doing investigative journalism. That takes money, staff. Advertising... But the paper is still reporting.... as opposed to posting rumours. VV is part of the social media wash, reacting to the latest rumour. Believe me, journalism is something quite different.
The TC has money for a sponsored marathon and sends it's advertising clients on free vacation getaways on chartered aircraft, but it doesn't have enough money for filing FOI requests and drilling down like its much smaller, independent publishing competitor (the name of which we won't focus on) accomplishes to do in each issue? I'm sure you understand that it's difficult for me to sympathise with the paper's predicament in light of the above.
And believe me, newspaper articles are so often full of errors, omissions and misconstrued facts that it can be comedic reading a story that one may be particularly familiar with. This isn't solely a TC problem, it's industry-wide, but if we're being honest with each other, mainstream media sources are not impervious to mistakes. And sources like VV are not impervious to them, either.
Here's hoping the current state of the industry is temporary and that we will once again find a way to make the dissemination of trustworthy, investigative, and thought provoking journalism possible ...and profitable for its disseminators.
