Has there ever been a fire here before? It's always looked like a disaster waiting to happen to me.

Used to be lots of minor explosions and fires when they had the shredder crusher. Nothing lately and nothing this big in at least 20 years. There was the barge flip recently here.

Seemed to have it somewhat under control at 3 PM especially relative to the pictures VHF posted. Fire boat was struggling a bit initially, couldn't keep their hoses on target. Once they got a lot of water on target they were very effective.

What a relief!
Coincidentally, I was testing my PC's new water cooling pump connected to my new fan controller. The odor was like that of burning electronics so I thought I might have just fried my fan controller. But then I noticed the smell in another part of the room and when I went to the window I saw the smoke and the smell.

What's worse for contamination? A few guys taking a piss from their "derelect" vessels in the Gorge, or this fire?

thats a scary thought.. falling through an open trap door.. thankfully all she suffered was a broken arm (not that a broken arm is a good thing) it could have been soo much worse
There's an epidemic of trap doors being left open.
A student at Dover Secondary School in Nanaimo fell about five metres through an open grate Thursday, breaking his leg.
The opening was part of a larger grated area that provides air intake for the school.

That's easy...the guys in the boat.

The cause of the barge fire may never be known, but it could be some of the folks from the boats in the gorge that decided to live in their cars.
I mean if you got an outside car on the top level it would be ideal when the barge puts out to sea.

It's likely the removal of a battery in one of the vehicles was missed.
I'm guessing they don't do it the way BMW does it:

Four VicPD cruisers just went screaming up Gorge Rd West, followed by two ambulances. presume they are crossing the Tillicum bridge into Esquimalt or Vic West...any idea what's up?

VW van fire yesterday on Wark St.
I walked right by that yesterday. Feel sorry for the owners of the other vehicles. At least one was damaged by the fire. Many others got covered in the fire suppressant stuff.
The firefighters asked the watching crowd if anyone knew who owned the vehicle beside the van. There wasn't an answer. Would hate to be that person - come out to my vehicle, hours or days later, to find it slightly burnt and not know why!

By the looks of it several vehicles were damaged by that fire. VW vans are known to suddenly combust. This is the second such incident in Victoria in recent years.
