Google and Time Magazine have partnered up to compile 30 years of satellite imagery for the entire world!

Click on this link. Select "explore the world" on the bottom-right corner and then on the bottom-right corner again type in "Victoria, BC."

Absolutely incredible! If you notice something interesting point it out below.

The Bear Mountain development, the deforestation just west of the Malahat, and the activity at the old gravel pit. I think there are more trees at Beacon Hill Park, just next to the petting zoo.

Yeah, Bear Mountain is hilarious. All of a sudden it's just there!

But to put things in perspective take a look at Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton. It puts our urban sprawl to serious shame (and that's a good thing).

That is an awesome find. The most profound change in the Victoria area is the expansion of the Construction Aggregates Pit on Metchosin rd which to new comers to the area is the Royal Bay area or where Latoria Rd Meets Metchosin Rd

It is also interesting to see the TCH near the View Royal Saanich Border at Portage inlet when it was widened from 2 lanes to 4 lanes.

The most continuous changes on all of the Island is the forest industry and the constant changes in the ground cover.Watching the patchwork of cut blocks on a scale like this is amazing.

Idiot here needs some help. When I click on the link I see the map, but I don't have the "Explore the world" tab at the bottom right. My bottom right shows Las Vegas.

I must be missing a piece of the puzzle.

I will need a month or two to absorb all of this. I suggest you take a look at Vancouver!

It is interesting to step through the years over Victoria and note how, after the highway was improved in 92 - 94, the growth of the Western Communities exploded. A similar growth pattern was experienced in Delta after the tunnel was constructed in 1959/60.

It's a conspiracy isn't it?

What browser/device are you using, Sparky? My phone displays their mobile version which doesn't appear to have the interactive map.

There'd be riots if anything changed there. Canes and walkers flying everywhere!

^ I've tried both Firefox and Explorer. Perhaps I should see if either has a newer version.

Firefox says I already have the latest version. Explorer does not appear to have a 64 bit windows 8 version.

Maybe I will just wait until it comes out in paperback. :)

I will try from work on Tuesday.

Try this, and then see if the Explorer the World tab is present.
