Is the totem pole supposed to have that face drawn on, or is that a work in progress?

It appeared to be done, but not sure of the artist as I took the photo through the window while the building was closed.

The new " " library is taking shape...

Ah, Herman Miller, I have one of their sit/stand desks - they spared no expense.  I'm also a fan of lighting design and they certainly have a variety of cool interior lighting.  The interior is also much larger than I thought it would be, it runs the whole block.

Interior shots of the market? How big is it inside?

Here you go.  We're now huge fans of those custom made panini sandwiches.

Nice looking building that appeared fully occupied, with more cool interior lighting.

I wonder if the new library will become a new daytime hangout for the homeless when weather conditions are not ideal?

Should cities instead encourage/fund daytime drop-in centres/adult daycares for those unable to help themselves? Nothing full scale like an Our Place, but somewhere to get out of the cold/rain, get some basic help.

Victoria seems to have given up on a new downtown library, even though that’s been discussed for decades, and many Canadian cities have recently built signature downtown branches. Hmmm..

Council has selected sxʷeŋ’xʷəŋ taŋ’exw James Bay Branch as the name for the new library. Pronounced s-hweng hw-ung tongue-oo-hw, it's the Lekwungen name for James Bay. Meeting rooms have also been named after two community leaders! @gvpl http://ow.ly/crDF30hYztY

So... James Bay Branch.

This can't possibly surprise anyone. Choose a completely unpronounceable name (even when spelled phonetically) because it has a "feel good" quality to it.

I'm sure it's quite easily pronounceable to people who speak that language. I wouldn't try to read War and Peace in its original Russian but denounce it as bad literature because all the words are nonsense to me.

They put the English name in there too. I say it's a good choice.

OK let me rephrase. The CoV has selected a name that will be unpronounceable for 99% of users and staff of the James Bay Branch.

Every time you enter the new branch you must state the following:

"Before I browse the library, I would first like to acknowledge that this library stands on the traditional territory of the Lekwungen and Coast Salish peoples."

they've got a recording of the proper pronounciation
http://www.victoria....ibrary name.wav

if you break it down it isn't so bad

s is the same as in english
xʷ doesn't exist in english; it's a wind or 'stormy-night' sound, like a w but no sound comes from your vocal cords, you just blow out
e is e
ŋ is written as ng in english
t is t
a is a
' is a glottal stop, like before the u & o in 'uh-oh'

Every time you enter the new branch you must state the following:

"Before I browse the library, I would first like to acknowledge that this library stands on the traditional territory of the Lekwungen and Coast Salish peoples."

or the tiresome 'r-word' that every politician reads from their scripts. I prefer "badassity". In the spirit of badassity I will call this library branch sxʷeŋ’xʷəŋ taŋ’exʷ

I agree. It's not difficult to say "James Bay Branch" or even "James Bay Library" which is what everyone is going to call it, including the staff who work there - although not officially of course. I am glad I don't have to answer their phones.

Except this language wasn't ever "read" by anyone, it was never a written language, and all the letters and punctuation and english phonetics are basically made up as they go

they never had an orthography but what leads you to conclude that they're just making it up as they go? who's just making it up, the linguists who use that notation or the natives?
