I can see CFAX and others calling it "Q Centre" or "Q Arena."

Know it all.

Wow, CFAX says the Q is paying $1.8M over ten years.  That's a lot of cake just for the name.  Maybe they get some free rentals to bring in some acts.  ClearChannel in the US was both a radio-station owner and concert promoter, until they spun off LiveNation, yet they remain linked by board members.  ClearChannel also runs outdoor advertising, like Jim Pattison does.  Q is a Pattison station.

$1.8M in cash and advertising. Could very well be $1 in cash!

Ya, I suppose, but Bear Mountain only paid $750k and had little to offer in advertising or other contra.  The Q does still sell ads in the $45-70 (per 3-second spot) range now.  8 years from now, who knows where technology has us.

Could be on site promos, color commentary, etc. I think it is pretty certain that the Q isn't paying $180K a year in cash and this way Langford can balance their books in the near term by booking the deal as revenue.

Time for CFAX to step up and save the McPherson Theatre.  CFAX Centre for the Performing Arts.

VibrantVictoria can maybe sponsor the business upstairs at 1414 Douglas St.  They need naming rights money for their storefront, its blank right now.

Isn't it in Colwood?

Whether you enjoy a stroll in the park, a swim in the pool, playing soccer with friends, or a round of golf, West Shore Parks & Recreation has programs and facilities for everyone. West Shore Parks & Recreation is governed by the West Shore Parks & Recreation Society's Board of Directors made up of representatives from the City of Colwood, the City of Langford, the District of Metchosin, the District of Highlands, the Juan de Fuca Electoral area and the Town of View Royal. Each municipality contribute, through tax requisition, toward the operation of the parks and recreation facilities.

They jointly run JDF Rec Centre and Q.

What do other cities' media outlets do when a competitor names a prominent sports facility? It will be awkward for them and hilarious for us if C-FAX has to say "100.3 the Q" every hour.

It's now clear what CFAX calls it.  They never call it Q.  They occasionally slip and say Bear in unscripted bits, but they are trying to say "...in Colwood" or just "at home" when they have to say where the Grizzlies played/are going to play.

Grizz completed a huge comeback last night, so CFAX is talking it up every 15 minutes, and every single time, it's "in Colwood".  Oh well, I guess Colwood gets more recognition than ever, too bad Metchosin, View Royal and Langford don't get credit for the arena they paid for.

What we have to do is call in and use the name at every opportunity: "Frank, the sewage pipeline would transport enough sewage in a week to fill the Q! Centre arena five times". Or "I'm calling to report an accident that has traffic on the highway backed up right to the Q! Centre arena".

No, we are merely pranksters.

Langford pulls Q Centre arena subsidy from Colwood, Highlands

Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton said she was blindsided by the decision, as were city staff.

“What does that say, to do it without notice, to do it without consultation, to do it without concern about the impact?” Hamilton said. “Because there is definitely an impact, we just have to determine what it is.”

She could not say how much is outstanding, in terms of overall payments, or what proportion each municipality was on the hook for. She said staff are reviewing the matter.

They will also review whether it was within Langford’s power to withdraw, Hamilton said.

Highlands Mayor Ken Williams said he was given no notice of the decision. He declined to comment further until staff reviewed the arrangement.

Because the agreement was a council resolution, rather than a formal contract, council has always had the power to stop paying, said Coun. Lanny Seaton, who chairs Langford’s parks and recreation committee and is a representative to the West Shore Parks and Recreation Society.

“We just felt we needed the money for what we’re doing in Langford,” Seaton said. Langford has spent about $30 million developing recreation centres within the municipality the past five or six years, he said.

The efficiency and speed with which those projects went ahead stands in stark contrast to the collaborative effort to get the Q Centre built, Young said. Langford was keen to see the centre built, but it took years to break ground.

“Whenever we wanted to build some capital projects down there, it was always impossible,” he said.

Now both the Grizz and Shamrocks say they need better lease rates:

Well nobody calls is Bear Mountain arena anymore.

But does this thing even hold any events, outside of hockey and lacrosse?

I can’t recall the last concert here.

Maybe a few boxing matches a few years ago?

Looks like VV only talks about it once every 10 years.
