The Taste of Europe Deli specializes in Polish/Ukrainian food. It will open in winter 2014 and offer traditional deli items for take-away and some seating capacity for the lunch crowd.

The owners are a husband and wife team who are currently operating a Taste of Europe Deli in Sidney. It is unclear if they are closing the Sidney location and moving operations to downtown Victoria or whether they are opening a second location.

Other Polish offerings in the area are Skinny Tato just around the corner from Taste of Europe on Johnson Street between Government and Broad streets, and Cook 'n Pan Deli in North Park at Cook and Grant streets.

Edit: and "Touch" of Europe Deli at Bay and Government, also a Polish deli. I think the Poles are slowly taking over.

Not to be confused with the Touch of Europe Deli at Government and Bay which also features authentic Eastern European fare.

Oh right, of course! That's going to make quite the Polish food zone. Four locations in a few square kilometers to get your Polish food fix (downtown is becoming Chicago!).

But I guess this shouldn't come as a surprise considering there are over 10,000 Poles on the south Island (1st, 2nd and 3rd generation) and if you add Ukrainians and Russians to the mix there are likely close to 25,000 people locally who wouldn't mind dropping in on this place.

These guys look like they're ready to open. If not today then any day now.

This place is open now. Besides the deli, there's sausages, pierogies, borscht, cabbage rolls and euro subs (not entirely sure what that is - Europe's a big place!) for decent prices - $7 to $10.

Gonna give it a try. I like Skinnytato's food but it is a little pricey

It's all so bizarre in that place.

FWIW, there's a new Polish deli operating on Amelia Street between the 800-blocks of Cormorant and Pandora. I think you're allowed to take pictures of your food there.

It's the new location of "Cook 'n Pan" (formerly at the corner of -- get this -- Cook and Pandora). I hope to check it out soon.

I've been here recently. Some people rave about it, but I refuse to put it into my regular rotation. Perogies are boiled, so they are the classic soft/bland style. Not my cup of tea, but I know others like them that way. Sausages are decent, but nothing spectacular.

I'd give it a 2, maybe 3 out of 5.

Cook 'n Pan is without question, in my opinion, the home of Victoria's best perogies. Haven't been to their new location, which is definitely a sketchy location, but will soon to see if they still have the flair from their Cook St days. SULT is good too, but much more expensive.

SULT reigns supreme as far as pierogies go in this town. And this is coming from a guy who grew up on the darned things.

I haven't been to the new CnP but I think they should have changed their name with the new location.

Apparently Sult is being pestered by the deli guy about how they can possibly make so many perogies a day by hand.

Really, that's odd since you can see them making perogies as you sit and wait for your order.

I used to love them when they were at Cook and Pandora.. I didn't know they were back... good news!

They still used Cook n' Pan at their last location at the corner of Cook and Grant. Their brand is definitely valuable and speaks to the classic perogies they offer.

I guess it would have been an easy fix though. Cook n' Pan becomes Cook n' Gran. Now it'd be what? On Amelia, but are they more Comorant or Mason. Ma'am? Co'am?

I recently ate there. I enjoyed the cabbage rolls in particular but the perogies are quite good as well.
