Read the link. That is the actual link you get when you click on the Victoria location on their website - "trashed".

Oh, I get it. I was expecting a diatribe on the deterioration of Yates Street. Instead it seems someone at head office had a problem with the management of the Victoria store.

They must have really been in a rush to close since they couldn't get their farewell sign oriented properly.  ;)

Sadly that means about 10 ( ??) people out of work this week.

How it Pig doing? Doesn't seem to be as busy as it was when they launched a few years ago.

I believe it has sold. Last time I was in there, was talking to the counter staff and he mentioned that they had new owners. The place has new hours, new specials, and a generally changed atmosphere. Not open as late as it once was.

Yeah, I didn't make that inference from "yates street trashed"...

I remember coming across their locations in vancouver and being very impressed but also noted the
units were small, more take out oriented, kind of like Foo or original Hernandez on View. I wonder
if the Yates location was just too big for their model, paired with the smaller density here in yyj

I think the concept is a tough sell. Generally, the smaller the menu the better the food. But when you walk into a sandwich place and there are only four or five options, many featuring unusual ingredients you are really placing trust into the chef's vision that the results will be spectacular. And I bet the probably were great sandwiches. But when you can go around the corner to the Italian Deli with a huge selection of quality ingredients and cheaper prices, well.

So it's a tough sell. Maybe would be a success in an area with less competition (Ogden Point, Oak Bay Avenue, ?)

I liked the sandwiches. There were people I know who didn’t. The porchetta had unrendered fat, which some people don’t like. The  buns were crusty, which some people don’t like. The soups and sides were kind of different, and some people didn’t like that.

I found that just a sandwich wasn’t enough quantity-wise and getting a sandwich with a side ended up being a fairly expensive lunch for a sandwich shop.

I think they would have done well if they:

  1. Were open in the evenings
  2. Had TV’s
  3. Served fries with their sandwiches

Didn't find it nearly as good as the original Cambie location in Vancouver when I visited in Nov 2015. Plus the place was deserted at lunchtime on a weekday. The navy bean stew was good though ;)

(Not the owner of, nor am I associated with, the Blue Fox Café, in any way.)

The place is for lease at about $4,300/mo. plus property tax + fees.

Something seemed off with regards to the seating and the vibe in there.

It was pretty much impossible to get feeling comfortable, regardless of how full it was (or wasn't).

Not sure if it was the communal seating, limited menu, or just a couple of bucks too much money for what was on my plate ... but despite my four visits there, it never really felt like I was having a relaxing lunch, or getting value for my money.

I stopped going completely early 2016

Without any side-dishes, those sandwiches also took about 8 minutes to eat ... thus making an enjoyable hour long lunch difficult. It seemed like you were finished up and walking out the door less than 15 minutes after walking in.

The food was "OK"at M&B, but close by the sandwiches were much better at the Mint Lunch.

I liked the sandwiches but eat-and-run, no lingering, kind of upscale fast food. I don't see how you can stay open doing 80% of your sales in a 2-hour window.
