If you visit Victoria's Anavets unit, located in an 85-seat bar next to Hermann's ... you will see a slightly risqué photograph of Ron Champion on the wall...

That's the last dive bar left downtown.
Were you allowed to go in if you were not a member? I think I've heard conflicting stories. I'm almost sure I had a beer there back in the 80's.

I think standard procedure with vets clubs is a member has to sign you in.
Really, are we really so shocked people stop going to places like this? If I wanted to have a glass of Blue in a place that looks like granddad's basement rec room then I'd drop by granddad's basement rec room. I'd love to visit this place once. Once for the novelty/sentimental factor. After that, I'll meet you at Garrick's or Bard & Banker.

Wonder how much they can get for their liquor primary license?

I think the two or three times that I went in there I just had to sign in but I wasn't barred or anything. The server was great and the folks hanging out were happy to see some fresh faces.

Never been in, but it's probably treated just like a legion where you have to sign in.

I used to go there with a buddy back in the early 80's and sometimes we got in without a fuss, sometimes we were shown the door because we weren't members and under age. Dive bars are hard to find these days unless you are in the states or east van or Nanaimo. Its easy to make a bar look nice, it is hard to carry off a decent dive bar with cheap beer.

I remember view street which at the time was fraternity of eagles branch, but that was a long time ago and to many bad half pints of beer along the way. bring back the bastion I say

^ It was located on Wharf Street in the early 80's was it not? Or was that a different branch?
I think that is correct, we used to call it "the hug and slug".

I've never been to this one, but I quite enjoyed going to the Legion on Main St in Vancouver. Super cheap beer, and the veterans loved having (younger) people in there. It turned into a bit of hipster hangout, but it takes one to know one I guess.

with the change in FP licenses coming, it will make the LP license worth not much.

GOOD NEWS! A new bar is opening in this space. Not an Army/Navy, just a bar.

It's going to be a sports bar.

I'm not sure what to call this place. All the former staff from Splash poolside bar at the 1961 Douglas St. former Travelers Inn have now moved here.

What has happened to Splash?
Still happening, I suppose with all new staff. I have not been in quite a while. As far as I know it's all new staff in the pub, restaurant and even the kitchen, since the beginning of this year. Most of the long-time staff made it through 5 ownership changes, but left after the current one took over.
