I walked by today. The east side of the old building is now completely open. They've started removing the floors in the old building too.

The only part of the building that will be saved are three exterior facade walls being help up by the outside steel supports.

It looks a bit like a movie set piece now.

I somehow never expected this to be hollowed out to a shell. I thought the old building would have walls knocked out and all sorts of changes, but I thought they would be using more of the actual building. It's just a facade...or as Nparker says a movie set.

The demolition has reached that final third wall, so it looks more like a movie set than ever.

It's kind of surreal to see the machines working away on top of the piles of rubble and twisted metal, right next to the tourist crowds and the flower baskets.

That looks so insane. The tourists must be wondering what the heck is going on, especially those from smaller towns where projects like this don’t exist.

It really opens up the view through to the magnificent old shopping mall building behind.

It's funny you should say this. I recall when the demolition was taking place for the Victoria Eaton Centre (now the Bay Centre) in the late 1980s hearing people remark "Wouldn't it be nice if they turned this whole area into a park". Given the opportunity, it seems some people envision all of the CoV being turned into green space.

They've managed to remove that massive hill of demolition rubble and are now into the excavation.

$10.8-million-Old-Town-condo-purchase-launches-Victoria-real-estate-values-to-new-heights.jpg

An artist's rendering of a luxury penthouse residence situated atop the upcoming Customs House development now rising on Government Street at Wharf Street in downtown Victoria's Old Town district. The record-setting price paid for the luxurious 4,420 square foot suite was $10.8 million, a figure millions of dollars above the second and third most expensive condominiums to sell in the Capital Region and on Vancouver Island.

$10.8 million Old Town condo purchase launches Victoria real-estate values to new heights

https://victoria.cit...to-new-heights/

The purchase of a yet-to-be-built Old Town condominium residence will forever change the lens through which Victoria’s residential real-estate offerings are perceived.

That is the sentiment shared by the team responsible for brokering last weekend’s record-setting pre-sale transaction already reverberating across the continent.

Firmly the most expensive condominium ever sold in the B.C. Capital and across the expanse of Vancouver Island, the Customs House development’s 4,420 square foot ultra-opulent penthouse has fetched a blindsiding $10.8 million, an achievement that not only underpins the demand for local real-estate but speaks to the region’s appeal before a worldly audience.

“The acquisition of a penthouse on Vancouver Island valued at over $2,400 per square foot has set off a beacon in real-estate offices across the continent,” says Craig Anderson, director of marketing and sales of Vancouver-based real-estate marketing firm Magnum Projects. [Full article]

Is this an old article? I would be shocked if this was done in 2020 but nonetheless we finally have brought luxury condo living to Victoria and it's about time!

That's existed for awhile, at least in luxury single family homes.  Lots of houses are being bought for $5 to $10 million and immediately being bulldozed.  I saw one 15,000+ sf house in the process of being built and owner didn't like it and it was promptly demolished including foundations and started again

Can't really say I'm concerned about the inside, but after reading that piece I sure do have higher expectations for the outside.

I don’t think that article is talking about houses, though.

That's a pretty crazy investment for an unfinished heritage conversion, hope Customs can please the buyer.
