with that movie lineup I'm not sure they will fill the seats.

last movie I saw in the old Capital 6, was Insidious.  Less than 10 people in the theatre that night.

If they have good movies, I might go to Capital 6 rather than to Tillicum Mall, just for the extra leg room and premium seating.

I think with the new parkade rules, free parking after 6, it's might be easier to find a parking spot downtown in the parkade than at Tillicum Mall on a busy movie night.

The sci-fi movie "Arrival" starts on the 10th.  The movie is getting rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and will probably be the first one we see there.

The longtime home of the Capitol 6 Theatre in Victoria will be redeveloped into commercial and office space but plans also leave the door open for other public uses.

Council in early October gave the final go-ahead to Jawl Properties’ 10-storey project – called Capitol VI in an ode to the theatre’s history. The new building has a three-storey podium base that will sit along Blanshard Street between Yates and View streets, before the upper floors are set back.

The inside of the podium will be built so it can possibly be used as a new downtown library, a YMCA-like facility, post-secondary school space or other uses, but those details will be finalized closer to construction. The five commercial units look to house a number of cafes and restaurants, along with a retail store.

The commercial space should include a movie theatre.

I don't think there's much of a future in movie theatres.

I'm not entirely sure.

We can all cook at home, or have complete meals delivered to our home, but dine-in restaurants are still popular.

It doesn't have to be a multiplex. An old school single screen venue would be fine.

What happened to video game arcades?

I think they catered to a niche clientele that was more price-sensitive.  Probably a narrow band:  13-25 years old, predominantly male.

And the home video game technology exceeded that of the arcade.

Now, go to the Rec Room in one of the larger cities.  Pretty popular arcades, and with considerably more female participation than I ever saw in the 80's.

Still popular: https://quazarsarcade.com/

These folks also had Powerhouse Pinball in the old Rock Bay power station, where you could have a drink and play at the same time, but https://www.powerhousepinball.com/ says it's currently closed because of problems with "permits and licensing."

Sidney's little movie theatre (I think it was 2 screens) was evicted while a condo was built, but the new building kept a covenant to lease space back to the theatre when it opens. I believe the new building is nearly ready to open, and the little independent theatre will have a new, modern home. Should be interesting.

There has been a functioning theatre at this location for nearly a century. It would be nice to see this honoured in the new building in some way.

Opening in 1925 and owned by Famous Players with seating listed at 1,212, the Capitol Theatre was eventually demolished in 1980 and in 1981 the Capitol 6 multiplex was built.

Seriously, when was the last time anyone on this board put up some pics from Sidney? Sometimes Sparky really disappoints me.

I think this might have come across as a bit harsh. Please allow me to clarify. The only reason why I pointed the finger at Sparky is because Mike K. is already a lost cause.

Sparky is much more enlightened when it comes to light hearted ribbing as opposed to Mike 'we'll upgrade this forum software but for now just use Google search' K.
