My parents moved to Victoria from a rented five-room house in Vancouver that housed all nine of us to a rented house here that had two spare bedrooms, which was more than adequate, since three of my brothers joined the army and one sister married a solder and went to Ontario. In keeping with the situation, those spare rooms were rented out to young married servicemen who wished to be together with their wives as long as possible before being sent overseas.

I am not certain of what their rent to my parents was, but I doubt if it was more than $5 a week, which included heat, electricity and water (we had no phone). It was a small amount, but the rooms were not free, as suggested by Helps.

Today’s housing problems are as different to what was as chalk is to cheese.

I think many if the mayor's woes could in theory be resolved if she offered a clear explanation.
E.g. "I am not and never have been the beneficiary of an Airbnb business in Victoria and no common-law partner of mine has run one while I have have been serving as mayor or councillor."

Or

"I have never been a party to diverting funds earmarked for policing in order to hire a spin doctor."

In other words, she needs to lie.

^ What the caller is saying is that during the war the TC never ran an article callling on people in Victoria to billet their homes to workers.

They would also have to search the Victoria Daily Times, a separate paper with a separate newsroom and I don't believe they are digitized. Of course, it would be good if Helps could point us to the actual article or say if was actually a misheard anecdote.

I'm very skeptical about it; I'm sure there were instances of free billeting, especially if the guest was known to the host. But as the above writer points out, a room was only five bucks a week and anyone employed by the service was probably paid around $15 a week.

Interesting. I know my first house was built for $3300 in 1933 so about 2.5 X annual income average. Now it's closer to 10 X family income. So woes are legit.

Anyway, it's a nutty idea without question BUT just an idea. Nothing criminal or suspicious... Worthy of ridicule but this witch hunt is silly. Who cares about her landlord and where she lives. She is renting! I could see the upset if she was living in a mansion in the uplands and had multiple AirBnB suites in downtown condos.... But she is living pretty modestly herself. I think this falls under a saying my dad used to say. "If you play the role of Jesus Christ prepare to be crucified"....

I think people are just tired of her style of governing .
Of her condescending and ridiculous statements .
Criminals aren't bad people they're just misunderstood.
How it seems to be beyond her to admit making any mistakes.
Even the Prime Minster of Canada told her what she was doing was illegal .
She ignored him of course.
Giving business licenses to illegal businesses.
I wonder how many homeless have come to Victoria as a direct result of how she
miss handled tent city .
How warm a cosy she makes life sound for addicts .
My 20something daughter who worked in the evening close to tent city was chased on numerous occasions .
What did the showers cost us that taxpayers paid to have put in .
Which to my knowledge were vandalized as soon as the paint was dry .
Oh well probably just a misunderstanding.
Speed limits that are all over the place.
Busses can't keep on schedule.
Mishandling of police affairs.
Her personal pet projects cost us every time.
On and on and on .
Unprofessional attitude for a professional job .
Not one thing one hundred things .
Ashamed and fed up period.

At the rate she's going now, Lisa Doesn't Help will most likely find herself unemployed come next year's municipal election when the voters turf her out of office over the homeless billeting controversy (and if Comrade Isitt supports what she's doing, he won't be long for council either).

Sure. Then it will be Isitt and Loveday running the show. Remember, Isitt got the most votes last election and has had nutty ideas for years. It will be an Ironic justice after Trumping up these non issues into fake controversies about Helps.

I think the last four years have clearly demonstrated to the voters in Victoria (or anybody that's been paying attention) that Ben Isitt isn't cut out to be Mayor, perhaps not even a Councillor.

Helps quite clearly isn't appropriate for either position.

Victoria has always leaned to the left, but I've not spoken to anybody living in the City who is happy with what's gone on in Victoria over the past four years.

Conceptually, a City Council that goes to extremes to apparently welcome the homeless and disadvantaged population of Canada to come to Victoria doesn't work for the folks who actually have to not only live with the fallout (see tent city), but also are called upon (it seems endlessly) to pay for it all ... payment that should be coming from Federal and Provincial sources ... but instead comes 100% from Betty in Fairfield and Barney in James Bay's taxes.

^ Betty and barney want to feel good about helping the homeless but don't want to be inconvenienced by them.

Helps will announce that she will not be running for re-election on January 1st. Both Our Place and Cool Aid have seen donations drop and an increase in demand for their services. Would be very easy for Lisa to replace either Kathy or Don. Then she could advocate for the homeless full time.

Not a chance. When (not if) Lisa Doesn't Help gets run out of City Hall next year, she'll be taking her stooges Comrade Isitt and Comrade Loveday with her because the Victoria public has had more than enough of socialists and SJWs infesting the place with their utopian ideas that end up doing Victoria more harm than good.

When the less fortunate come from across the country in a steady stream, encouraged by the actions and comments of Victoria City Council, Betty and Barney really shouldn't be called upon personally to pay for anything from their tax dollars.

Supporting Canada's homeless population with local Victoria tax dollars really isn't a sustainable model.

If true, then the only reason for that would be that Lisa Doesn't Help knows she's going to lose and she's unwilling to face an angry public over the damage she's done in her four years in office, so she'd rather opt to bail out to avoid ticked-off Victoria voters. Because Comrade Isitt and Comrade Loveday are associated with her, they'll end up going down with the ship as well, then we'll be able to put grownups in charge at City Hall while Ms. Doesn't Help, Isitt and Loveday go back to their full-time job of professional SJWs and leftist agitators.

^ I would not get your hopes up that there will be enough well-known moderates stepping forward to defeat the incumbents.

I think you have to factor the percentage of rentals in Victoria into the equation.  Helps and Crew are seen as doing a lot to help with more rentals and this may be seen as positive when officially 59% of Victorians rent (and with the number of illegal suites this is actually much larger). We are guaranteed an interesting election!!!

A lot of those renters cannot vote though. Likely a much higher percentage than owners.

I don't know about that, we could get some surprises when candidates start announcing their plans to run.

As long as they have been residents for several months (maybe even 30-days?), they can cast a ballot.
