Indeed, there are likely more than a few homeowners in far Gonzales that don't give a crap about what's going on downtown, and may vote left because they're old, wealthy hippies who never get downtown, or simply don't think the growing homeless and addicted population frequenting the streets is anything to worry about ... sort of the old hippie "live and let live" mindset.

I think the Helps/Isitt/Loveday success in elections is largely based around a small, but solid base that simply takes advantage of the fact that so few people actually vote in Victoria municipal elections.

Well, I think that's something that's going to need to change - and fast.  What folks think doesn't affect them now will end up affecting them - negatively - soon enough.

Other key factors in their favour, and contributing to the state of things, are the growth and increasing influence of the "poverty industry" (which although it purports to help people also I think perpetuates the negative things); and the way the local media has seemingly become sort of a mouthpiece for the poverty industry, being very careful to slant their stories accordingly (probably misleadingly in some cases) and ignoring news stories that might cause people to become concerned about the state of things.

If it were a rent versus own debate than the owners will lose every time. There are far more renters in the City of Victoria than owners. Also while I agree completely with the concerns expressed about the City I would bet that you would find that the proportion of owners voting to renters is actually higher. The issue is not who owns and who rents it is just that the city is a lot more left leaning than most and thus we get stuck with the council, mlas, and mps that we do.

Helps has done a masterful job at separating the have's from the have not's and garnering support from the later group on the basis that they can have all of the cake they want because the have's will pay for it.

But no one from the business community, or the practical get-it-done commercial side of the city ever steps forward to run. That is party due to the elimination of the business owners' vote. But I think it's also a reaction of frustration, that left-leaning councils have been able to govern through feelings instead of pragmatic considerations.

I've long hated the idea of any kind of party politics creeping in to municipal politics. But I wonder. At least in Vancouver, you know where a prospective councillor is coming from, Vision Vancouver, NPA, COPE etc. Maybe if there were a municipal group in Victoria that clearly identified itself as not the loony left or the reactionary right, voters would see some choices.

^ As I have said before, which credible businessperson do you know is willing to forfeit their own business for a $90K a year job that guarantees you a constant onslaught of abuse from the left and little thanks from anyone else?

It's $100,000 per year and if you do it right it only takes 20-25 hours of your time each week.

The Mayor does not have to be at every event, and does not need to answer every single media inquiry every day. There are plenty of much higher paid managers in the City that work 9-5 and can do that.

A person should be able to handle the Mayor job and their business simultaneously.

Well someone from the centre is going to have to put their money where their mouth is, if there is ever to be any effective change at the Victoria council table.

So in other words, VHF, are you saying the reason why Victoria jumps from one mayoral controversy to another is related to the mayor not having a job beyond her mayoralty?

Know it all.

Having known lots of people in local politics it is a 60 hour+ a week job. It is not just the public appearances and media enquiries, it is being stopped every time you appear in public, the billions of emails and social media requests that you get and all of the reading and prep work you need to do to be competent at your job. It is not possible to be able to run a private business as well unless you have a decent management team and are prepared to turn things over to them. That is also assuming of course that you do not have a public facing business that will allow the lefties you PO during your tenure to protest and trash it.

With hindsight, Changes the Clown seems like a more moderate candidate. Or that group of dudes who vowed that if elected they would dismantle the civic government.

Or Mr. Floatie.

For some reason I get the feeling he is one of Victoria's current councillor's alter-ego.

No, I just believe this current Mayor is just not up to the job.  Her resume is very scant.

^ To my point, $90K or $100K is likely 2x the best paying job she ever (or will ever) have. Those are the types of people you attract to the role.

I certainly hope she is a onetime wonder and gets out of politics completely.
Her style of politics is too much like Trumps .
You never know what she will say when she opens her mouth .
People outside of Victoria might be taken in by her ability to appear
charming and well spoken .

Surely there is some retired civil servant who is sitting around twiddling his/her thumbs watching the City go to hell, that has had enough and can put pause on their retirement to right the ship.

Lots but you think any of them want the job? They are busy travelling, having fun with the grandkids and enjoying life.
