PM announced on CFAX this morning that she'll be running again.

PM is some of the deadest of dead wood in desperate need of pruning. 21 years on council & counting and she wants 4 more years? I beseech the Victoria voters to send her off to the Sooke Hills come November.

Why not give someone else a chance to step in and guide our city? Helen Hughes and Bea Holland knew when it was time to step down. Both were great councillors in their own right.

Possibly because like some - and I stress "some" and not all by any means, but some - left of center quasi-socialists she recognizes a decent taxpayer-funded $ gig when she sees it? I have no idea in the case of a Victoria city councillor - after 21 years what pensionable benefits does she derive? Are they good, bad or indifferent? And again because I honestly don't recall since she's been on council since the Jurassic Age - which in and of itself is a huge problem and just plain wrong IMO (term limits anyone?) - what is or was it she did professionally before glomming onto the public teat? I am genuinely curious. Aside that is from despising anything taller than she is or designed and built in a post WWII modernist style...

She was one of the big organizers behind the push against the Eaton Centre as it was making its way through the municipal process in the 1980's. Unfortunately her heritage preservation efforts were about three decades too late -- by the 80's most of what has been wiped out had already been wiped out.

Unfortunately that means losing good councillors when you get them after a couple of terms.

Madoff has been in power since 1993 which means this is her eighth election. Yikes.

1993

1996

1999

2002

2005

2008

2011

...and now in 2014.

A 4x limit, especially with terms now being four years long, is plenty of time.

... and after a couple of terms a good councilor can become a horrible corrupt one.

Democracy sure sucks when you don't like who gets voted in.

Kinda my thoughts too.  I don't get too worked up about term limits.

we get what we deserve. If you don't like a repetitive candidate, get off your ass and vote for another. it is really that simple. I am told only 25% of eligible voters vote. Vote or STFU

I did exactly what you said to do and in 2011 I cast my vote for as many non-incumbents as possible. I strongly suspect my vote(s) will be nearly as wasted this year as in years past, but still I WILL vote. So I guess at least I don't have to STFU.

It's all relative. You could just as easily say that this site, or rather a good percentage of the participants herein, are against everything she's for :-)

I predict there will soon be disparaging remarks made about her supporters......

I think she's great as a councillor when it comes to certain issues and frustratingly backwards when it comes to others.

I also like her as a person. Whenever I see her I try to engage her and make small talk. Honestly she's a great person but as a politician she has to bow to the interests of her core supporters and say what they expect her to say. If she came out and said "I love the new Bayview buildings" after making remarks about how out of place they would be just years earlier she'd be "Gudgeoned" before she knew what hit her.

Nparker you are free to express yourself and feel happy that although you/I/we may have voted for the losers, you/I/we may have voted for the best candidates and hopefully if you/I/we keep on doing that one day the "right" thing will happen. To date I have little evidence that the right things happen the first time tried.

And I will vote again for the candidates who most closely align with my views, but I am also a realist and understand how civic elections tend to work in this city. I don't expect to see significant change in the make up of our local representation. :-(
