I don't know about you guys, but sitting inches from vehicles zipping isn't exactly what I aspire to do on my lunch hour, both because of the proximity to massive vehicles and exhaust in your face.

I mean it's a neat gimmick and all but is it really suited for a busy street like Fort? View Street and Broughton maybe, but busy arterials?

No, I don't agree.  I don't know anyone that has decided to avoid Fort for any purpose,  due to exhaust.  People like the outside.

I sat there yesterday and it was a perfectly pleasant experience. I wasn't the least bit bothered by the traffic.

Ok, fair enough. For me, personally speaking, the proximity to vehicles is just too close. I don't mind sitting on a patio (removed at least by some degree from vehicles), for the record.

Modern vehicles that meet stringent emission standards don't really blow exhaust in your face. Most are quite clean.

Good point about the proximity to vehicles. If you're sitting on a patio you're likely at least several feet away from the nearest vehicle lane. These will bring you much closer. This wouldn't work on some sections of road, but as the city continues to shun cars, who knows. .

One of my favorite coffee shops on Fort (Street Level Espresso) has a few chairs outside. I love sitting there and observing. Victoria feels super urban down there.

isn't there a bike lane on Fort? so that bike lane is between you and the car lane?

No bike lane on that block of Fort St. If there were it would be on the other side of the road anyways.

I think it works at this location because it's pretty close to Douglas, and there's generally no time to get vehicles up to 40-50km by that point.  This is because most of the traffic is "turning traffic", from Douglas, cars coming from Fort usually miss the Douglas light, and there's a sidewalk right past the parklet so most people drive a little slower because there are often pedestrians there.

Also, all of the buses (and typically trucks) drive on the right/South side of the road opposite the parklet. If this were to be on the other side of the road it would be much less appealing.

What happens to the Fort Street parklet now that the bike lane is going in on that side?
