Looks like a new tenant has been found for the restaurant space in the Temple Building; Mai Mai's Bistro has posted a photo of the set of keys and this caption on their Facebook page.

"It's official,keys for the next Mai Mai's!!!!

Mai Mai's downtown Victoria under construction. "

So currently they have a location in Sooke? http://www.maimaisbistro.com/ Interesting to venture INTO the city from the 'burbs. Let's hope this works out better than it did for Smokin' Bones.

Several folks in my office are "Sooke-ites" ("Sooke-ers"? "Sooke-onians"? "Sooke-isians"?...hm), who swear by the original place. I think Mrs. ASE and I will have to venture into the new location after they open - do we know yet when that will be?

I'm a Sookie! My husband and I have lived here for a couple years now and have eaten at Mai Mai's at least once a month since we moved out from Victoria, and regularly praise the heavens that this small town has such a good sushi place. Jo-Jo also has other options on the menu, and we've rarely been disappointed. He's been talking about expanding into Victoria for months now, so I'm happy to see him branching out.

Ohmy - some of their signature rolls sounds omnomnommy.

And the mai mai roll sounds almost decadent (for a vegetarian).

Looking forward to trying it out!

just came back from Sooke and the Mai Mai's Bistro.  I'll go back by bus if I have to and am thrilled that they are opening in downtown Victoria.  had a long chat with the owner/chef, Jo Jo, and talked about his ideas for downtown.  this is what happens when a French trained chef takes up sushi.  and the waitress was the most enthusiastic I have encountered for a long time.

And already for sale.  Price is low, rent must be sky high.

And already for sale...

Apparently the "current owner over spent on refurbishing the location...so has to sell as he cannot run both his businesses..."

Matt.

I'm a little confused...so he sells his business or he re-leases the space? So if it sells for $85,000 you get the equipment, branding etc...is that how it works?

Probably need to transfer the lease, if the landlord is willing.

Not sure what the lease says about lease-hold improvements and what the landlord owns, and the brand... what's it worth? Since there's another one of these somewhere, it's probably not part of the deal.

More or less you are buying the equipment/chattels as the business is worth nil.

Matt.

Today they were very busy. Busiest I've ever seen them.

It's too bad they're selling as the food is excellent.

Was pretty unimpressed with the food I got the one time I tried it there to be honest.

Mai Mai's is closing today. There was a buyer lined up who was ready to purchase the restaurant, apparently, but the sale fell through when the owners of the building, allegedly, did not agree to allowing the restaurant to be accessed from Fort.
