Good effort. But Mayweather has a strong defence. That made the difference to me.

And all the women he beat gave Mayweather some valuable experience defeating opponents smaller than him.

I'm not sure about a re-match. Mayweather says he'll do one more fight then retire. Not sure it was close enough to have anyone screaming for a re-match. And it was not nearly exciting enough that it would generate the kind of money this one did. ie. it did not create a whole bunch of new boxing fans, it was not good enough for that to have happened.

The most entertaining aspect, by far, was the interview with drunk Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley, among others.

Agreed.

Defence, clutching and running do not make for a great fight. Though I complain about the money I spent for PPV, it pales in comparison to the ticket prices some paid.

What was really disappointing to me was that the two preliminary fights were just awful.

All in all the event did nothing to further the popularity of boxing. In fact, it probably hurt boxing popularity a bit as casual observers such as myself were turned off. The prelims sucked. The main event was underwhelming, to say the least.

The demise of boxing is well documented. American black kids now gladly choose football or basketball over boxing. So was this boxing's last grand spectacle? When is the next time we see celebrities fighting over $100,000 ringside tickets?

I think it has really set back boxing, for a long time now.

You mean the Mayweather-Pacquaio fight has?

Ya.  They had so many casual fans watching, and what they saw did not make them boxing fans.

On Saturday night, Periscope received 66 reports of fight-related copyright violations from the fight's rights holders, according to a Twitter spokeswoman who didn't specify which rights holders filed the complaints.

Of the 66 complaints, Periscope employees took down 30 streams of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight within minutes of receiving the takedown requests, per the spokeswoman. The remaining 36 streams were no longer available by the time Periscope's team received the copyright-violation reports, she said.

The fight's Periscope streams had nowhere near the same quality as the official TV broadcast, but that didn't stop some streams from nabbing thousands of concurrent viewers during the fight. One stream that Ad Age came across surpassed 10,000 concurrent viewers.
And Periscope's audience seemed to be fully aware they were watching pirated content. When some users sent hearts to the person streaming the fight -- Periscope's version of Facebook's "like" button -- others asked them to stop sending hearts because they believed that was the signal Periscope's team used to identify streams pirating the fight. The spokeswoman didn't respond to a question asking whether that was the case.

Totally agree.

Boxing was in the throws of death already, and this did nothing to help pull it back into the mainstream. It's fully a niche product at this point.

What was with the small number of preliminary fights? Lewis-Tyson back in the day had 9 preliminary fights.

I think they are just better at doing the hour-long documentary before.  And that gets more people buying the fight.  In the "olden days" you could not buy with your remote control, so most buys had already happened well before an hour or two before the fight.  Now they are trying to get buys right up to the main event.

Note:  Sticky Wicket estimated they turned away 300 people at the door.  Yates Taphouse, that never does fights, had 40+ phone calls on Saturday inquiring.

There was also lots of US sailors in town for R & R prior to Trident Fury that added to local demand.

People did not really know how to watch.  You pretty much had to find the CanadaStar website, and that's a bit obscure for a casual fan.

This is terrible for getting people interested in boxing. It's like getting people interested in cycling at the height of the Lance Armstrong fiasco.

For something that was supposed to be the fight of the century it seemed rather ho-hum from what I read. Heck, it wasn't even heavyweights. When I was a kid we didn't really pay much attention to non-heavyweights (with a couple of exceptions like Sugar Ray Leonard).

Add to that the crazy cost of watching it and the fact that the "favourite" was an extremely inarticulate, cowardly woman-beater and you have a recipe for irrelevance.

I bet that a few years from now when promoters are again advertising the "fight of the century" they'll hear a deafening "ho-hum".

Turns out Pacquaio had a shoulder injury that he didn't disclose prior to the fight and is now going in for surgery to correct it. Two fans are attempting to sue for $5million for "damages".

The promoters and boxers collectively brought in $400M+. To them this was most certainly the fight of the century.

That pushes the total revenue for the fight to between $550 and $595 million depending on exactly how many of the PPV buys were in HD ($100) versus SD ($90).

Of that $500-plus million in revenue, more than $350 million will go to Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Cant believe there is a rematch. The first one was a dud. Then again it set PPV records. Wont get my money this time.
