Why didn't the restaurant folks just leave the customers alone? Sounds like they made a big deal in the restaurant about what the customers did. I don't think what the customers did was right but the whole thing would have blown over if they had just let it pass and had a good laugh about them when they left. We certainly laugh at a lot of our customers after they have left the store. Surely that kind of customer behaviour is not that common so is not worth making a big deal out of. That public biting response to the customer DOES NOT reflect well on the restaurant and does not make me ever want to go there.
