Now it's time to move the paint-in downtown.  Or just start another similar one.

Something similar perhaps. Moss Street seems to work for the Paint-In and of course ties in with the Art Gallery. Move the AGGV and then we can discuss relocating the Paint-In.

Ya, no real extra benefit of doing it on Douglas.

Not sure you would want to do it often on Douglas. If it were to be a regular thing (every Sunday in summer or something), I think it would have to be Government Street. But a LOT of the participating vendors were businesses on Douglas, so for a one-off I think this location made more sense than I would have thought. The Mint had outdoor seating. Almost all of the Public Market vendors had huge additional exposure.

..The Mint had outdoor seating...

This looked particularly nice to me.

Ya, the Mint was well-done!

And yet the restaurant was still pretty quiet inside. Ate there today.

But yeah, I would call this event a massive success. Kudos to the organizers. An incredible feat for its first year.

I wondered a bit about his.  Cactus looked fairly busy, but not sure how 3pm on a Sunday usually looks.

Consensus on FB seems to be that this was a success:

I think Government St. already gets enough ped traffic and it wouldn't look all that unusual or feel that different to have it closed, whereas on Douglas it would feel quite different. Also give the cruise ship passengers a reason to explore further than the tourist trap areas.

Also give the cruise ship passengers a reason to explore further than the tourist trap areas.

Well if that was the plan today, it did not work.  Zero cruise ships were in port today.

And don't forget that the vast majority call in after 5pm when they are here, so a daytime event does not work either.

Colour and light to liven up Douglas Street façade as part of corridor beautification initiative

http://victoria.citi...ion-initiative/

The first step in the Downtown Victoria Business Association’s Douglas Street beautification plan is about to become reality on the corner of Douglas and Yates streets.

A test strip of removable building façade adhesive has been applied to 1280 Douglas Street, a two-storey office building currently home to festival and events organizer Atomique Productions. [Full article]

In the spring, the association will begin implementing a number of on-street elements outlined in the plan.

While Hobbis wanted to keep many of the elements a surprise, she hinted they could include non-permanent interactive lighting, changing the look of the bus shelters, and introducing the idea of retail kiosks, with a twist on food trucks.

“We think it could be the beginning of something new for a major downtown thoroughfare,” she said, adding the fixtures will be around throughout the summer and will continue into the fall based on public opinion. “It’s a way to try something different for the area.”

I think this confirms that downtown Victoria is puzzling in more ways than one...
