So far, more than 2000 residents and 9 municipalities in the CRD (plus the CRD) have endorsed a "Declaration of the Right to a Healthy Environment" as part of the David Suzuki Foundation Blue Dot campaign.

http://bluedot.ca/

Of the 51 municipalities across Canada that have endorsed a declaration, 20% are in the CRD (33% on Vancouver Island).

The CRD municipalities that have endorsed a declaration so far are...

Victoria, BC | 12-18-2014
Saanich, BC | 01-26-2015
Highlands, BC | 02-16-2015
Central Saanich, BC | 02-16-2015
View Royal, BC | 02-17-2015
Sooke, BC | 02-23-2015
North Saanich, BC | 03-02-2015
Islands Trust, BC | 03-11-2015
Capital Regional District, BC | 04-13-2015
Sidney, BC | 04-27-2015

http://www.bluedot.ca/declarations

The declaration recently approved by the CRD starts on page 22 of the second pdf file listed here (search the document for 'blue dot')

What can you do?

1. If they have not already done so, ask your mayor and council to endorse and approve the declaration (with an action plan).

2. Join with more than 73,000 Canadians who support the campaign.

http://bluedot.ca/join-us/

3. Spread the word.

And what compensation/action is there for me as a citizen if I feel my right to a healthy environment is being compromised? Can I sue the City? The Province? The Feds?

And are Municipalities absolving themselves from the subsequent lawsuits?

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Capital Regional District endorse the

following declaration:

"That all people have the right to live in a healthy environment, including:

• The right to breathe clean air;

• The right to drink clean water;

• The right to consume safe food;

• The right to access nature;

• The right to know about pollutants and contaminants released into the local

environment;

• The right to participate in decision-making that will affect the environment

Its a dream for activists...how enforceable is it?

It's not. But you can bet someone will make a tremendous amount of money through consulting, planning, presentations, and one day, even taxes.

This bit is my favorite: (PDF source)

The City of Victoria shall apply the precautionary principle: where threats of serious or

irreversible damage to human health or the environment exist, the City of Victoria shall take

cost-effective measures to prevent the degradation of the environment and protect the

health of its citizens. Lack of full scientific certainty shall not be viewed as sufficient reason

for the City of Victoria to postpone such measures.

Anyway, I'd like to have the city cut down some trees - the uncontained pollen is wreaking havoc on my allergies this year...

What was that again about environmentalism becoming the new religion...?

Hey if it's good enough for the billion dollar sewage treatment boondoggle, I can't see why we need science to back-up any other health-related initiatives. I am good with divining rods, tarot cards and just general uneasy feelings to drive public health policy aren't you?

We feel so much better about ourselves already. Yay! Guilt free living is finally here!

So who is going to define what is "clean" and "safe". By every sane definition, we have access to clean air and water and incredibly safe food.

Yes, but is it Certified Safe®? How can you go on living not knowing whether your air, water and food is Certified Safe®?

Suzuki will be in Victoria tomorrow to announce a showing of Call of the Forest: The Forgotten Wisdom of Trees at UVic's Cinecenta theatre. He'll be joining botanist Diana Beresford-Kroeger.

The event takes place at 7PM.
