Yes, driverless cars are going to be a nightmare for the environment and the built form of cities.  Just as we are hitting the limits of acceptable sprawl now in many cities, they'll enable the next level.  Its possible that the driving improvements will counterbalance this (i.e. the cars won't have to stop and accelerate as much, cars on the highway could drive a lot closer and draft each other) I doubt it'll be a net positive.

Well thanks a lot for the nightmare fuel.  Ambien sales are sure to increase.

Pretty soon you need to say please when you ask your car to run errands. Then it thinks, I don't need this bag of water telling me what to do....

With todays new technology, and as much as I am a fan of trains and rail; I think that using the E&N rail right of way as a self driving vehicle corridor would make cense .

My self driving Tesla and your self driving shuttle enter the corridor at Goldstream Avenue. My car takes me to work, then returns empty to Langford to pick up a paying fare thus reducing my ownership costs and your shuttle returns with some Westbound passengers. The corridor is equipped with sensors that communicate with the traffic, especially at level crossings and at the edges the so there would be no need for rails or a center divider. Inbound and outbound traffic are timed to pass each other at intersections so as to minimize cross traffic disruptions. All vehicles will be 'drafting' however the head units will have more distance between them in order to moderate the speeds of following units.

Pretty soon, you can marry your autonomous car or as in the case of the movie "Her", have sex with your phones operating system.

Ressen, I would support self driving buses on the corridor or something similar to what you just posted, but not self driving cars, leave those to the highways and regular roads.

A Tesla on auto-drive or whatever they call it rear ended a Phoenix city motorcycle cop at a stop light. That will get his attention.

You know, watching a street-sweeper this morning, would that not be a good candidate for self-driving?  The master could be driven on one side of the street, while it's slave works the other, under the guidance of the one operator.  50% less labour right off the bat.

These things operate at very low traffic hours, and with lots of flashing lights and sound etc.

Ya, for sure.  Maybe the master can do the edges, but the slaves can cover all the rest.
