Stopped by and tasted their Jolly Beggar (Pale Ale) and Mistress (Saison). Both were very good. Grabbed a 6 pack of the Pale Ale.

Good setup and tasting room.

Good find, my thanks to Mike.

^ Unique for a brand new brewery to already have 6 packs.

Typically they start with bombers (650mL bottles) then work up to a canning line as demand warrants. That being said, companies like West Coast Canning are making it possible for smaller producers, such as Category 12 and Moon, to can so perhaps these guys are in the same boat.

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is suing Macaloney’s Caledonian Distillery in Saanich– and by extension owner, Graeme Macaloney — for the use of the terms Caledonian and Macaloney.

The SWA says it consistently takes action in global markets to prevent the use of Scottish indications of origin on whisky, which is not Scotch Whisky.

“This is vital to protecting both Scotland’s national drink and to ensuring that consumers across the world are clear about whether or not they are buying whisky that is produced in Scotland,” a statement from the association provided to Global News reads.

Which brings me to the term sleazy, which was used to reference knock offs of Polish Silesian linens, which where some of the finest in the world, and attracted a lot of fakery.

So what Caledonian should do is call their Scottish whiskey Scotties. That name isn’t taken, I’m like 99% sure.

Know it all.

I saw this on the tube news the other night and what the story here does not mention was that Macaloney worked quite diligently and in close association some years ago with the SWA which had absolutely no problem apparently with either the name/branding or the labeling - until the local brew started winning both international acclaim and awards. At which point the shite has seemingly now hit the fan....

It's funny whenever you see something framed as a "David and Goliath" scenario.

Our local distillery is the David, the Scottish whisky board is the Goliath. But if a megabrewer like Molson/Coors put out a Caledonian Ale now they'd by the Goliath and the whisky board is the David. But if I started a little distillery making "Rob's Macaloney Caledonian" now I'm the David and Victoria Caledonian is the Goliath.

Graeme best realize he can't win this legal battle and should change his labeling asap.

I was about to pick up a bottle of Crown Royal and I saw a new whiskey called Revelstoke Canadian and I thought, oh, that's closer to home and I bought it and when I read the fine print I see it's produced and bottled in Minnesota and I'm like WTF.

Thair image plays heavy an th' scots angle 'n walks a braw line wit'oot explicitly cawin th' product Scotch. Bit as 'ar as a'm concerned th' lads accent alone shuid gie him th' freedom tae brand his wee drams as he fancies.

In golden letters, the label clearly states it is a Canadian-made whisky, but the Scotch Whisky Association says that doesn't go far enough and it's taking the British Columbia distiller that makes the single malt to court to force it to change its branding.

"It's nonsense," said Graeme Macaloney, who owns and operates the Victoria distillery that makes Macaloney's Caledonian whisky.

"It's really a frivolous, quite damaging lawsuit, to be honest."

The Scotch Whisky Association, which represents the industry in Scotland and guards its brand around the world, launched the lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court in March.

It says Macaloney uses words synonymous with scotch whisky that are "likely to deceive and mislead consumers in British Columbia to wrongly believe that the defendant's whiskies are scotch whisky."

It objects to Macaloney's use of the words "Caledonian," which it argues is synonymous with "scotch." It also objects to the use of the word "island" and the use of Macaloney's own surname on the branding.

Graeme best realize he can't win this legal battle and should change his labeling asap.

A Saanich distillery has settled a long-running branding dispute with the Scotch Whisky Association.

Graeme Macaloney, who has operated Macaloney Brewer and Distillers since 2016, is slightly changing his distillery’s name and re-labelling some of his brands, moving away from popular names and places in his native Scotland. The Scotch Whisky Association claimed the brands were misleading, making Canadians believe the whisky was made in Scotland.

The David-versus-Goliath battle came to a head in April last year when the Scotch Whisky Association, whose governing council is controlled by the four largest scotch whisky multi-national corporations, filed a lawsuit to prevent the Victoria craft distillery from using Macaloney (its founder’s name), the words Island, Glenloy, Invermallie and others in its whisky branding. He named the brand’s Glenloy and Invermallie whiskies after locations where his clan lived for more than 1,000 years.
