http://www.vicnews.c.../375331551.htmlThe roof on the square, located in Victoria’s Old Town, is being removed and the walkway that is visible from street level at the Johnson Street entrance is being widened.
“You’ll be able to see right through to Pandora,” said property manager Kim Harrat. “It’s nice to see the sun shining in the square.”
The exterior brick wall at the back of the square is also being lowered from roughly 12 feet to five feet. There are plans to add seating such as benches and specialty items.
“There’s going to be something built out of the timbers,” Harrat said.
The $1-million project has been in the works for several years and is expected to be complete at the end of June in time for the summer.
& there will be people living next door too. that will probably be a nice courtyard area when it's done.

A huge improvement already. Now just bring in some cool events and a few interesting tenants and perhaps the clock can be rolled back here 25-30 years.

a few more photos of Market Square, what a vast improvement.
Were you following me around today JG?
Edit: No you were not. The shadows in your above pictures suggest you were there several hours earlier than I was.

While I was walking around downtown this afternoon (and apparently being stalked by Janion Guy ), I couldn't help but think how great it is to see all this new construction and renovations to heritage structures. My hat is off to all the developers who must endure endless hurdles at City Hall. If only the powers that be could be made to truly understand that the security of downtown rests directly upon the ability to both get more residents living in the core, and offer these same people the services needed to keep them there. The days of being a quaint, faux-Londonesque museum of antiquities, to please tourists who could not afford to visit the real thing in "Old Blighty" are over. Making the (taxpaying) locals happy is the way of the future.

This woman needs to get herself a hobby that doesn't involve city council:
Market Square management says the company that deconstructed the shelter took possession of the timbers as part of their contract....Councillor Pam Madoff says she's been told that Market Square intends to have the lumber it gets back chopped up and used to build benches and tables.
"It's very nice that there's that gesture. Although, whether anybody would know where they come from... But at least they're going to be retained. But I think it's really unfortunate that this incredible old growth lumber that came from the Cowichan Valley and then was part of the outer wharves and then part of Market Square is going to end up in Montana."Madoff says it's unfortunate the timbers couldn't be kept for local use on a heritage project."I think that perhaps they just didn't realize how significant they were and how valuable they were, and that there would have been local interest. I know that there were local inquiries, but I suppose they weren't able to be followed up on because the contract had already been let."

It's just more of that inscrutably selective attitude re: heritage and history.

Methinks that open space would be a great spot for a mini-park or play fountain, not unlike the one at Uptown. Something to draw people in.

I'm pretty sure more people use this courthouse lawn now then use the fountain at uptown. I guess it's working pretty good at drawing people in.

Actually, that courthouse property would be a great spot for a destination fountain. The most impressive fountain in town, a legitimate tourist attraction, I mean. It has a great view of the cathedral now and eventually it will have a great view of the courthouse building's replacement (and there's no way a new courthouse building wouldn't seem like a work of art compared to the current one).

And I really wish that office-block-turned-residential had been painted. Just for some variation.

I find her annoying and her comments on these matters irrelevant but on this I agree with her. It would have been nice to see these timbers re-purposed locally. Not a big deal but it would have been nice.
