Note - those on council without prior careers and experience might be "too green", which is fine if its an exception, but a bit of a disaster when its the rule rather than the exception.

What about a Unite slate - with candidates in the other Municipalities as well with the full stated goal of amalgamation of the core (Esquimalt, Saanich, Oak Bay, Victoria) as one of the central tenants of the platform? If a Unite slate can win in those municipalities, we might actual get amalgamation...

I'd add View Royal as well - but keep it to those 5.

One thing is for sure, we will need a catchy name like "Vision Victoria" (which is a total rip off, I know...).

Yes but the voters will finally see how much the bridge actually cost and they will be watching the weekly price increases of the sewage plant.
We will never know how much the bridge actually cost. Council stopped providing updates 6 months ago.

I'll put it out there again:
I was runner-up in the 2008 election. If you want inside tips on how you too can also be a runner-up, I would be pleased to pass along some helpful guidance.
Very kind offer Rob! I'll join you and offer assistance to candidates - marketing, speaking, and election platform development.

As long as you stop right at those borders I'm with you, well not really with you but you know what I mean.

They don't really know what they've spent and they quit caring once they ran out of blue paint.

as one of the central tenants of the platform?
Sorry, pedantry:
Both words, tenant and tenet, derive from the Latin verb tenere, “to hold,” but they are not interchangeable.
A tenant is someone who rents or leases a house, apartment, etc. from a landlord.
A tenet is a principle, dogma, belief, or doctrine generally held to be true.
Carry on..

I've also been a runner-up (Oak Bay, 2011). I can also offer excellent advice on how not to win.

First, you have to decide why you want to run. Are you merely trying to prove a point? Is it for the challenge, like grandpa entering a 10k run? Or do you intend to win? Have you and your advisors realistically evaluated your potential path to victory?
I'm reminded of the candidate in a recent Victoria election who said, "Instead of a platform, I am simply running on emotion. Victoria, I bring you my feelings". He's a decent smart guy. How did he do? Dead last. Way behind racist t-shirt dude.
Keep in mind that media outlets have a set amount of resources they can devote to covering a candidate. With 13 elections in the CRD alone, every new candidate that enters a race divides the coverage that much more.
So ask yourself, why are you doing this? Campaigning to win is really hard work. It will affect your health, your job and your relationships.
I don't give a rat's a$s about your feelings. We need competent leaders.

This. Now if only the voters would rely more on their heads and less on their "feelings". Ugh!

In essence, I am smarter, better, nicer blabla than all the others.
Too many candidates think being successful at one thing means they have the solutions to many other things. E.g. Paul Martin, John Diefenbaker, Herbert Hoover etc.
I am still trying to find what the Isitt types were previously successful at though.

If you want to get elected then you need to hire a marketing firm to determine what the hot button issues are. You then promise to address all of those issues while criticizing your opponents. After you are elected then you can do whatever you want. You just have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror afterwards.
Helps' platform preached openness and transparency, accountability and fiscal responsibility at City Hall and economic development. Each one of those resonated well with voters. You can judge for yourself how well she has executed on those issues.

I swear a person could get elected with just lots of lawn signs that say:
John Smith
for Victoria City Council
- Lower taxes
- More accountability
- City Hall run for all citizens

All you need is one of the top FaceBook pages in Victoria and it would be a shoo-in to get elected.

I agree and I've also always thought a party could win the provincial election by a landslide with signs that say "make BC ferries cheaper, fix traffic in Vancouver."

Other than the name, isn't this what Lisa Helps had on her signs?
