Location: Secret location to be revealed moments before the event

For the fourth consecutive year, Victoria will be host to Le Dîner en Blanc, the annual secret event where guests dress all in white and descend on a secret location for a pop-up gourmet picnic. The event has become a much-anticipated annual celebration in Victoria. Approximately 1,600 foodies, fashion and cultural enthusiasts attended the 2015 event at Ship’s Point, which was the highest rated Le Dîner en Blanc event in all of Canada. This year, close to 2,000 people are expected. The evening includes musical entertainment, dancing on location, the lighting of thousands of sparklers and an after party, also held at a secret location.

2017 Diner en Blanc details:

The World’s Most Elegant Picnic Celebrates 5 years in Victoria!

Victoria, June 13, 2017 – A leading summer event in Paris for nearly 30 years, this elegant and secret affair is now well on its way to becoming THE summer tradition in Victoria!  On Friday July 7, 2017, Le Dîner en Blanc - Victoria celebrates its 5th anniversary.  Brinks Events, the Victoria event host is hard at work to prepare another magical night for their guests.

“Last year, we began the evening with 1,700 white-clad guests making a dramatic entrance as they walked over the blue bridge from Johnson Street to the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort,” said Aidan Henry, owner and creative director, Brink Events. “It was our largest event to date and this year we’re planning for more people so we’ve added a lot of experiential décor and entertainers that will create our most surprising and beautiful evening yet.”

The pop-up picnic has become a much-anticipated event in Victoria since it first surprised the city at St. Ann’s Academy in 2013. Since then the event has been also held at Fisherman’s Wharf, Ship’s Point and the Delta. Chef Dan Hayes, The London Chef will provide catered picnics, also for the fifth year, with a menu inspired by Paris that offers three options including Arc, Eiffel and Louvre.
“The 2017 event is a going to provide an incredible evening for our fifth anniversary,” said Henry. “Of course, our location will remain a secret to the public and our guests until the very last minute, which is something that even those who have attended before get excited about each year.”

Participation to this unique event happens in three stages: Phase 1 is for members who attended the previous year; Phase 2 is for new members who are referred by Phase I attendees; and Phase 3, is for people who signed up on the waiting list at victoria.dinerenblanc.com/register. New registrations are still being taken and ticket sales for all phases are open.

To maintain the uniqueness of Le Dîner en Blanc as well as staying true to tradition, guests must observe certain requirements and follow a few key rules:
- Once confirmed, each guest’s participation becomes mandatory, regardless of weather conditions.  This is a rain or shine event.
- Dress code:  head-to-toe in elegant and white only attire.  Originality is encouraged as long as it is stylish and tasteful.
- Table setting:  all white!
- Champagne and/or wine. Beer and hard liquor are prohibited.
- As per local alcohol regulations, guests cannot bring their own alcohol. Guests wishing to enjoy some wine or Champagne, must reserve online through the Dîner en Blanc’s e-store. However, guests are welcome to bring their own non-alcoholic beverages.
- To ensure that the location secret is kept undisclosed until last minute, guests meet at assigned departure location and are escorted by a Dîner en Blanc volunteer.
- In order to leave the event location as clean as when they arrived, guests are required to leave with all their belongings, leftovers and litter.

Guests must bring
- A table, two white chairs, white tablecloth.
- A picnic basket comprising fine food and proper stemware and white dinnerware.
- A catered picnic basket option from The London Chef, which can be picked up on site, will be available for those who do not wish to pack their own. Guests wishing to do so must reserve online through the Dîner en Blanc’s e-store.

I try to understand this event, but I can't help thinking of the participants as little while sheep.

Yup, mentally I've tried to understand and/or get into the spirit of the thing but it just does not appeal. I might well be off base or just being plain unfair as I've never attended, but superficially it has the smell of pretention about it. Of course polite society would never ever use a term as base or indelicate as "smell" so I suppose "air" of pretention is more apropos for those of heightened sensibility. Regardless whether it be so-called fine dining, cars or wine (<- especially wine!), something inside my head just immediately clicks to the Off position when I sense the Pretentious B******t Meter is close at hand.

So Sparky, considering the pic you posted, did you actually attend?

No, but Mrs. Sparky did. I think that she and her friend enjoyed the preparations as well as the fun of getting out and doing something different. I think she met and talked to a lot of people that she wouldn't have interacted with in the grocery line.

YOLO

I think some people are craving rules and decorum. Remember when you had to dress up to go out for dinner or go on an airplane? Socializing meant going out and meeting people and using your manners?

Nowadays I see people walking around Downtown wearing worn out pajamas, eating McDonald's breakfast at 4 pm and going home to play Candy Crush for six hours.

Is diner en blanc pretentious? Sure. But I think it's a natural reaction, a way to ensure that for at least one day your photo won't show up on "People of Walmart".

Except for white jeans they are not easy to find. They do look nice in the summer.

Let's see now.  When I was 17 or so and working at Western Speedway, I owned a pair of white rugby pants.  And sometime around that same era, I owned some white jeans.

That's kind of old-school.  You can just use Tinder now.

But did you pair your rugby pants with a button-down shirt and a leather tie?

If you want to buy some cheap white clothes, just head down to the paint store.

when I first saw these people walking there last night, I thought there must be a big painting job at City Hall.

I just did a HAL Alaska cruise, and did not see a pair of white pants on any passenger.

Dress whites in the military though - that would answer your question :).

/\......good one you got me there!

So let me rephrase - what male, under a certain age, and not in the military or in a working man's career ie a professional painter - as a general rule owns a pair of dress white pants, the kind you see at Diner en Blanc?

I cannot imagine any circumstances under which I would ever purchase, own, lease or rent :) white pants. Instead I picture a guy like the 'Skipper' on Gilligan's Island, or a significantly older tourist with a Hawaiian shirt, protruding belly and chicken legs strolling along a Caribbean resort wearing that attire and that's about it. But I've never owned or otherwise worn or even considered wearing white pants, not even white jeans.
