I don’t know if there is an official number, but the common folk on salt spring always say we go from about 10k residents year round to 30k in the summer. That’s a lot of MLA’s with vacation homes!

 

Yeah they had to make sure that their own properties remained free of the tax.

The middle class is being carved out. At least Qualicum and Parksville had several years to get their affairs in order.

 

There are quite significant sections of both towns that are designed as tourist accommodation zones where you cannot live more than 6 months out of the year.  The idea at the time was to force a variety of STR options so that snowbirds and tourists would have a place to stay. Wonder if that all goes away now under these new rules.
