It's hard to know all what's going on, but there is a bug nasty spit going on.

A group sent this email today:

If you live in the Fairfield Gonzales area or have a business in the area, you will want to become a member of the Fairfield Gonzales Community Association ASAP and, if you can, attend the Annual General meeting on October 24. The existing board had a meeting in September and through a community grass roots movement, had their motions struck down. Now, they are trying to mobilize through back channels by having a closed door meeting on October 18 to approve ‘new voting’ members. We think it is to reintroduce the same motions that were voted down. What can you do? Well if you live in the Fairfield Gonzales area or operate a business you can become a member. To become a member, email your name and address to the place@fairfieldcommunity.ca by noon on October 18. You must include both, so that you can become a member. Run, don’t walk to do this. Then, attend the AGM on October 24. If you can’t attend the meeting, you can provide a proxy. Send an email to stafler@netbc.com if you want a proxy. Finally, if you know someone who lives in the area, please get them to sign up by noon, on October 18.

To me, this proxy voting is nasty.   It's simply a matter of who can get to enough doors and get a proxy, the person signing it over might just be trying to get rid of the "well-meaning nice" neighbour off their doorstep.

From the CA site:

The Board of Directors recommended a set of bylaw changes to the membership in September 2016. These changes were voted down at a Special General Meeting. The Board views these changes as being very important for the functioning of the Society, and so it has taken the feedback received at that meeting into account to present a revised version of changes.

It is anticipated that the meeting will feature the largest gathering of fleece outerwear in Victoria's history.

I'd like to know more as I am a  FGCA member.  As I understand it a group of the usual NIMBY suspects are forming a neighbourhood association, seemingly to lobby against any changes in the hood. No bike lanes, no "high rises" on Cook Street, no small lot subdivision on Moss Street, etc. etc. To do this I guess one step would be to wrest control of the Land Use Committee from FGCA . The bylaw changes FGCA is proposing are going to make it harder for an insurgent group to gain control.

Googling the email of person who will collect proxy votes comes up with Sid Tafler is a writer and editor based in Victoria. E-mail: stafler@netbc.com

It's Tafler on one side, and Don Monsour on the other.  Two guys with big egos that like to get their way.

Mr. Tafler once penned an op-ed piece to the local paper about his method of counting absentee condo owners: how many lights are on in a building at night.

Looking out at a myriad of 100% occupied rental towers right now, I can see about 40% of units have lights on. Mr. Tafler would have told us that if it were a condo, it would be 60% empty.

This is the sort of thinking that is behind the coup, or whatever you want to call it.

Know it all.
