Hey guys,  I know the best place in Vic is Panama flats, but it's rare these days for that to freeze over.

Anyone know of any ponds that are more likely to freeze over? i'm willing to drive up to shawnigan to play some pond hockey and shoot some drone footage of it.

Just past Duncan along Herd Road there's a farmers field that freezes over. It's huge, and on weekends they let people use it (or at least they did). If there's anyone you can call up there to help assess the situation, they'll need to drive quite a ways down Herd. The field will be on the right.

Know it all.

Elk Lake froze over back in the 60's and kids were playing hockey.

I've even hear of the days when you could drive cars on the lake.

Probably would take forever down in Victoria, i'm sure a pod around the malahat would be a better bet

I see hear stories from family that years ago they skated on Shawnigan lake from one end to the other.

The low lands used to be the last lots to be developed so there were plenty of small ponds.

Sometimes they had small branches sticking through that you would have to chop off with the old mans axe, and then smooth it in with some packed snow using the hockey puck.

That idea caught on and now you see NHL referees fixing holes in the ice the same way, except they omit the axe part.

Went up to Spectacle Lake today to go skating, and play a little pond hockey. Got some drone footage, 40 second mark is where you start to get a good view over the lake.

Cheers

^ Thanks for that, that is cool! I didn't even know this place existed. Just a 30-40 minute drive or so?

Oddly enough when we went to Cedar Hill Jr HS back in the early 70's - and when it was cold enough, which wasn't often as you'd expect -  we'd play hockey on the frozen water holes of Cedar Hill golf course during PE class; as I recall that happened exactly three times over course of the 3 years I attended that school.

As a kid in elementary school in the 70s, we went to these fields on Hastings by school bus.

Spirit Lake on Mt Tuam usually has skating in the winters I am told. That side of the hill gets very little sunlight, stays pretty cold this time of year.
