BC Ferries released its first quarter results today. Net earnings for the first three months ended June 30, 2014 were $13.9 million,
compared to net earnings of $4.3 million in the first quarter of the previous year.
These earnings reflect the effects of increased fares, higher ferry transportation fees, fuel surcharges and lower financing costs, partially offset by lower traffic levels, lower social program fees and
operating cost increases.

Yesterday morning, quite early like at 8am, CFAX was reporting that all sailings from Tswassen to the Gulf Islands were full right through to about 4:30pm.

How did you deduce that.
inflation is far greater than that in 45 years.
In 1969 a home was $19 000 and today the same home is $490 000 (this IS a fact from my childhood home that twe sold recently
Are you saying also that a home today should only be $90 000?
I will await your facts that back up your statement.

Using those fares in 1969, if keeping pace with inflation, a car fare now would be $31 or so.
Yes, $31. But that's probably not the only thing driving up rates. Terminals are better, vessels are better, environmental and safety regulations are tighter.

That's general inflation. I'm not sure we have a calculator for each of real estate, ferries, oranges, apples, gold. Just general.

The cost to take an average car or truck onto a BC Ferry cost about the same as a tank of gas in the auto ,then and now, give or take a few bucks.
In 1969 $5 woudl fill a tank of gas and it would get your car onto the ferry.

Never thought of it that way. Gas fluctuates a bit too much for that to hold true always but in general it does seem like it.
Comparing general inflation to real estate is pretty outrageous. Real estate is the one thing we can't create more of.

Real estate is the one thing we can't create more of.
What about strata properties where we turn one property into 200 homes.

What about Netherlands, or other planets, like the planned Mars colony?

The Netherlands - somewhat. That's an example that can't be easily replicated. Not really needed either, we have plenty of land on earth, just need to further densify it to sustainably use it.

I see you can now use credit and debit at self-serve terminals as a walk-on at Swartz Bay and Tswwassen.
To that I say, WELCOME TO 1996, BCF!
And fix your website to reflect that, here: http://www.bcferries...s/fareinfo.html

Speed. It's slow to input PIN numbers, wait for authorization, etc... compared to credit card.
It makes all the difference when the boat is about to leave in 3 minutes...

What about for the other 57 minutes or 117 minutes when it's not about to leave? Or, to put it another way, the other 98.5% of the time they are taking money? It's a sissy excuse only fitting of a monopoly.
Heck, 34 airlines take PayPal. Even Malaysia airlines, hope they don't lose your PIN.
