This story is blowing up all over secondary news sites and aggregators saying DNA finds zero tuna which wasn't what the original article said at all.

Social media is saying "it's official--Times says tuna is fake", while the actual paywalled Times article says basically you'd have to be a little crazy to think it's not 100% real tuna.

There's something fishy about how this is swimming around the internet.

A Subway spokesperson told MarketWatch over email that DNA testing is an unreliable way to identify denatured proteins — or proteins whose characteristic properties change due to heat or acidity, such as the way Subway’s tuna was cooked before it was served on a sandwich, and then later tested by the Times.

“Unfortunately, various media outlets have confused the inability of DNA testing to confirm a specific protein with a determination that the protein is not present,” the Subway rep wrote. “The testing that the New York Times report references does not show that there is not tuna in Subway’s tuna. All it says is that the testing could not confirm tuna, which is what one would expect from a DNA test of denatured proteins. The fact is Subway restaurants serve 100% wild-caught, cooked tuna, which is mixed with mayonnaise and used in freshly made sandwiches, wraps and salads that are served to and enjoyed by our guests. ”

It's like if they tested the bones in the Kamloops graves but couldn't extract any usable human DNA and someone said, aha, that proves they're space aliens.

This would be a stock buy of the decade for a guaranteed 5-10% return, if Subway were a publicly traded company. Which curiously it isn't. Which also proves that its tuna must be pollock.

Sorry, the porpoise pun is only allowed once a month.

That's wild. I didn't realize we had met the quota for the month.

Pollock is currently trading over twice the price of tuna so a fish sandwich might have tuna filler.

not that they are aliens. just that they can’t confirm human.

surely any decent reporter wound just ask for open access to the tuna procurement chain. that would end the story. I do not doubt the tuna is juiced with something. but I’m almost certain it has tuna at its base.

Are you saying a New York Times reporter spending months doing an in-depth article didn't think to ask?

Subway fanatics have a chance to win free subs for life, there’s just one small catch.

The sandwich chain announced that it would supply one Subway super-fan with a lifetime supply of free subs if they agree to legally change their first name to “Subway.”

Between August 1 and August 4, SubwayNameChange.com will be open to enter for a chance to win the subs. The winner will be chosen by random drawing on August 7.

According to the official contest rules, the lifetime supply of subs will come in the form of a one time payment of $50,000 in Subway gift cards. Additionally, the company will provide the winner $750 to help cover the legal fees associated with the name change.
