3,789 police incidents were recorded by the Victoria Police Department throughout the City of Victoria and Esquimalt since January 28 of this year, according to online crime data.

The overwhelming number of robberies, thefts, assaults, break-ins, home invasions, auto thefts and disorderly incidents, among others, is a reflection of the inner city’s reality as a hotbed of crime, albeit overall criminal activity throughout the region is falling.

Statistics Canada recently pegged the Capital Region as home to the highest incident rate of violent crimes in the province. Surprisingly, southern Vancouver Island has more violent crime than the Lower Mainland despite the big city’s organized crime, shootings and crime-ridden enclaves.

Despite the stark figures, overall crime in the region, including the rest of the nation, is falling. The Census Metropolitan Area for Victoria, which includes thirteen municipalities on southern Vancouver Island, saw a crime drop of 6% between 2015 and 2016. Between 2006 and 2016, crime in the region has fallen by 42%. VV
