The B.C. Green Party is not thrilled with Premier Horgan's plan to raise the provincial minimum wage by over 32% in three years.
Party leader Andrew Weaver says the agreement he signed with B.C. NDP leader John Horgan included the establishment of a 'fair wages commission' that would receive input from both parties on the future of the minimum wage.
This weeks announcement the provincial wage threshold would rise from $11.30 to $15 by 2021, Weaver contests, is 'prejudicial' to the future findings of the commission.
"Although I am pleased to see an important piece of our agreement move forward, I am concerned that the apparent addition of a 2021 timeline is prejudicial to the work of the Fair Wages Commission," Weaver said.
Horgan announced this week the B.C. minimum wage will rise by 50 cents in September from $10.80 to $11.30. Wages earned by servers at bars and restaurants will also to $10.10 from $9.60. The raise hike was first announced by the B.C. Liberal's prior to the last election that saw the party lose its majority status. VV
