...but then a few years from now the York House building itself comes up for replacement and the tree gets chopped?

Presumably, the (former?) residents of York House would die to the last person to preserve this historical specimen. Surely they care about this tree for more reasons than just the fact that it's on their property - right? I mean, they're not NIMBYs.  :whyme:

Sorry I meant to use the sarcasm font in my above post.

The aerial view indicates that this building would be quite a bit less massive than numerous Oak Bay Ave/Newport Ave apartment blocks. Seriously, there are probably ~20 buildings that are more massive than this place could ever possibly be on this small lot.

They have an image on their website that illustrates this point!

Maybe this project should be controversial for how small it is. And yet in that pamphlet the critics smear it as being:

  • "this massive 5-storey building"
  • "a massive, 5-storey, 14-unit (?!?) luxury condo building"
  • "too large, too high"
  • "this massive structure"

This is just so much inane hyperbole.

This whole thing seems bizarre to me. Instead of encroaching on the tree, why not encroach on the frickin' vehicle access to the building next door??

I know, I know, because they aren't allowed, because the driveway and parking lot next door require plenty of direct sun. Sigh.

But that is how NIMBYs operate. Remember how the Cook & Oliphant project was going to be "taller than the telephone poles!"  Oh the humanity!

As an unnimby don't you have to happily accept that nimbys exist?

No, I don't have to accept anything. In fact, I think it behooves to me to point out the NIMBY irrationality and hypocrisy.

This building looks fantastic. Can we just take the plans and build it in Saanich?

Seriously, though, Victoria councillors get hammered for fighting growth, but Oak Bay's council is so much worse for approving new housing.

Maybe this should get built west of port Renfrew. Seriously ugly building. The worst of 1990s American style slap it down.

Now you’re talking. I’d buy into a place like that in Port Renfrew, 1000%.
