I don't think that $300 is too much.  It might be the high side of normal, but one should be able to carry pretty much any amount without having to worry..

I agree $300 isn't much, but to a couple of muggers who see you flash that cash in the bar, it's easy non-traceable pickings.

The last couple of mornings I've seen a Vic PD sergeant making the rounds of 800 Johnson.

Haliburton, Cordova Bay/Claremont area... Any word on what happened there last night? The scanner had a code 4 going for about an hour, I missed the first part of the call. This morning when I drove by there were a couple of police cars and an Infiniti SUV (an older one) literally pulled apart as if a border agent had searched it. Doors open, door panels off, papers out, stuff everywhere, it had been dusted for prints. There was another vehicle in the driveway with a black tarp over part of it. Later today there were more police vehicles plus the ident team and the garage was open. The media was there but I still haven't heard a thing about it anywhere.

You mean "police vow to remain silent".  "Publication ban" sounds like a court order.  It's not.

It's a court sealing order.

I do not believe this.  Can you show me an example?  Why would court already be involved, unless charges have been laid somewhere and this is an extension of some other investigation?  And if so, why, of all times, would that ban be removed on a weekend, if that's the case?

Courts regularly authorize police actions before they occur. The time is usually based on x hours from start time. It isn't all some great conspiracy.

Can you show me an example of where that includes some type of publication ban though?

Not easily. Where they exist they're presented in court at first or second appearance circumstances dictating.

You can not cite a single online Canadian source of this, ever, or a reference to the general practice?

That's why I believe you are wrong about the ban part.

Cool. I'll post the case when charges are laid.

I suspect (but don't know) there will be a release somewhat shortly about it.

It's interesting. I've notice actual beatcops in the 700-900 blocks of Johnson/Pandora regularly since about two weeks ago. Actual cops on foot on a beat... miracle! Even saw some bike cops out the other day.

We call it the HB Effect.

Lets just hope they stay. A physical presence is a good thing but not just temporarily

The judge was up early this morning to lift the publication ban on the Royal Oak investigation, CFAX has a story now.

A B.C. Supreme Court justice freed an accused cocaine trafficker Friday because there was no sheriff to lead the man from a cell in the Victoria courthouse to the courtroom.

The incident highlighted an ongoing sheriff shortage that has closed courtrooms, delayed trials and tossed cases out of court around B.C. The Victoria courthouse is particularly hard hit.
