Well since they are planning an expansion, they lease is most likely not able "get rid Thriftys"

Costco and Ikea are not the answer here.

Personally, I'd like an entertainment complex. Lounge/Sit down restaurant (Joey?), VR cafe, movie theatre, bowling alley, etc...

^^ Doubt that stuff can make money in high-rent town.  Bowling failed once in a Langford rec centre.

Google the news for "new bowling alley", you will find dismal results.  You are not gonna find success with land values / leases here the way they are.

depends on when Thrifty's lease expires.  Thrifty's has become like Sears since they were bought out

Also since when is Hillside planning another expansion?

How so?

Run by distant corporate masters with little or no concern for the history or success of the local outlets.

i can also agree thriftys isn't what it used to be... i have shopped there less since they started charging for their paper bags (bad enough they don't give you a choice between paper or plastic but charging for handless paper bags pfft)

Not Hillside, just the Thriftys. They would like to expand towards Doncaster. They tried to get part of the Target location when Canadian Tire moved in.

Do you also stop buying less gas when the price per litre goes up 3 cents?

When I was in the mall recently I counted 13 empty storefronts in the new expansion that was added a few years ago on the Shelbourne Street side.

Now that Sears is gone that end is deader than a doornail and by the look of some of the other nearby shops, they will soon be gone as well.

No but you go down the street to the gas station that is $.03 less.

That saves me $1.80 on a fill-up.

Salvation for Hillside Mall and the Sears space?

"Cineplex, one of Canada’s leading entertainment and media companies, is launching a theatre concept expansion in the country and will continue to add to its national footprint including the potential of moving into vacant shopping mall space"

I don’t know if we need more theatre capacity. Dunno.

The University Heights Cinema will be closing, though. Sidney is getting a revamped Cinema and Capital Six isn’t a long-term play in its current building or location.

Know it all.

The article doesn't mention much theatre space, though. Cineplex has diversified and could bring a Playdium or Rec Room concept to Hillside, which I think would work well. Having some sort of entertainment draw in the Hillside area would be great. I can easily see something like this going into a renovated Sears space

The Rec Room would be awesome and would do well. Nothing in the core like it. Should include some bowling, and maybe in conjunction with another Cineplex Theatre (though they may consider it to be too close to Tillicum for that).
