Highrock Park in Esquimalt will be closed to the public at some point this week as crews (weather permitting) work on installing radio equipment upgrades with the use of a helicopter. There is no set time or date, but this is the week they plan on carrying out the upgrade.

David, I've been hearing that radio problems with the new CREST roll-out are already causing issues. Is this something you've heard as well, or can quantify?

Granted my info is second hand so it may be incorrect but I'm curious what your thoughts are.

The radio quality is with the old system which is now partially dismantled. Sort of a "short term pain long term gain" situation. But not an ideal situation at all.

First to transition will be Saanich & Victoria Fire who go to amalgamated Disoatch in January.

This is good news.

Well thanks to Mayor Helps for making this happen.

Great to be working with Saanich to lead coordinated fire dispatch in the region and potentially for all of Vancouver Island!

Horth said CREST will need to wait for all 50 parties to come on board with the new system before encryption will begin, and estimated the end of 2019 or beginning of 2020 to be a likely time frame.

As of this morning all South Island police agencies have transitioned over to the new consolidated 911 dispatch centre operated by E-Comm 911. RCMP from Ladysmith south switched over this a.m.

Have existing call-takers and dispatchers simply moved over or was there a staffing change too?

All existing staff were offered positions at the new centre. Large amount went over but some found positions elsewhere or retired. They hired some new staff as well to bridge the gap.

You mean Jantzen?  Former Saanich PD member turned Colwood councilor.

How did Dubow get on the board? Maybe it's best not to ask.

Anyway, I really love not knowing what's happening in the community after the switch to the new radios.

CREST upgrade ends complaints on dead zones, garbled exchanges

Silence surrounding the region’s newly upgraded emergency communications system speaks volumes about its effectiveness, say those who use it every day.

Police and fire chiefs around the region say the lack of feedback from frontline staff on the new and improved CREST (Capital Region Emergency Service Telecommunications) system means it’s working as hoped to improve safety of emergency responders and the public.

A $16-million disaster-resistant building is being proposed to house and keep intact Greater Victoria’s public-safety infrastructure. The facility would help first-responders to continue operating with minimal interruption during a major emergency.

The board behind the region’s emergency communications system is asking its shareholders to support and help fund the plan.

The Capital Region Emergency Service Telecommunications (CREST) system’s board has already approved entering into an agreement to buy a $1.8-million plot of land in Langford and is seeking approval from its 20 shareholders, which include the region’s municipalities, emergency services and the province to go ahead with design and building.

“As we have seen over the last few years, as a result of climate change, windstorms and wildfires and atypical events such as floods, tornados and earthquakes are on the rise. The world is becoming increasingly hazardous and there is more reliance than ever on the first responders,” said CREST chair Tim Morrison.

CRD pushes for cellphone levy to cover 911 costs

A levy on landlines once covered the cost of operations, but with fewer homes using landlines, the pool of funding has dropped each year

Currently the CRD, which has an agreement with CREST to provide an emergency communications system for the region, funds about $1.7 million of the organization’s $8-million budget.

According to Statistics Canada, by 2019, the last year numbers were available, just over half of all B.C. homes had a landline, down from 72.5 per cent in 2014.
