I am sick and tired of these freeloaders rights superseding mine as a taxpayer both in the City of Victoria and the Province of BC. I can well imagine what would happen if I decided to set up a tent on the lawn of the Legislature tomorrow morning. I doubt I'd be allowed to stay there past noon. These ingrates take over land my tax dollars help to maintain and no one in authority does anything for over 4 months - then the trespassers are allowed to leave whenever and IF EVER it suits them. There is something seriously wrong with our system if this is allowed to continue.

I have worked Downtown for the last 7 years and the homeless and addiction issues have never been as bad as they are now. I care a lot about our city and really worry that Downtown is at its breaking point.

The lack of leadership, and frankly law enforcement is incredibly disheartening.

I'm all for lending a helping hand, but I think those that are exploiting the generosity and charity of others should be ashamed of themselves.

I see city hall wants to go down the needle exchange route again. I'm sure that will be great for downtown. I mean, it worked so well the first time.

start piping in some Barry Manilow and they'll soon clear and put up some bright spotlights on the roof of the courthouse

long time lurker, i've been following this thread for awhile.. and i agree with alot of what is being said, this has gone on too long, it's been allowed to snowball and if there isn't a solid end to this it will just continue to keep growing

if i've got the basics right...all this started because it's considered provincial land not city land so the city cannot remove the campers the province has to.. and i keep wondering why doesn't the province just lease the land to the city then it becomes a city issue and they can evict them like any other city park?

I think the push is more for a safe injection site opposed to a needle exchange makes a bit more sense as everything should take place in theory within the building. I used to work very near the old needle exchange I doubt the majority of needles were ever "exchanged" they were poking out of everywhere, almost got poked a number of times, was constantly in fear that I had accidentally poked myself and not realized it, as I had explained in a previous post I did have homeless excrement sprayed evenly across my face at one point. The mobile needle passing out system with the needle disposal boxes placed throughout the city(although disturbing) seems to work much better.

I was shocked in the documentary "Streets Of Plenty" on the downtown east side of Vancouver to see a none drug addict using the vancouver safe injection site "Insite" for the purpose of first time experimentation of Heroine. If these facilities become more common with the fear factor removed will psychonauts go on Crypto Market(Silk Road) or elsewhere (with the idea of not getting addicted) and purchase some Heroine and take off to the safe injection site? Is there anything wrong with that?

.

Totally agree. Why would anyone want to start a retail business downtown anymore? The theft alone must be insane. Not to mention there is a significant portion of the population who avoid downtown at all costs because of the drug addicts and criminals. I would rather start a biz in saanich langford anywhere else

I no longer have any sympathy. There are so many disabled and others on waiting lists for permanent subsidized housing that are struggling paying market rents and groceries. These tenters seem to want it all. Free food and subsidized rent. What of the others who are quietly struggling and causing no problems?

I'm sick of seeing that David Johnston's mug everywhere. I'm sick of pandhandlers every 20 yards. I've worked downtown for almost 25 years. It's in a sad sad state. Let's send Isitt to live at tent city since he's such a fan. I shudder to think what his and Helps' "ideal" city would look like.

I agree.  But do you also agree the reason we have such a problem, is because we have set up the services (Our Place, bottle depot) that encourages people to come downtown?

Sidney has no problems, nor does Saanich, Langford etc. etc.

Well it depends in part by what you mean by problem. Saanich, View Royal, and Colwood at the minimum all have campers. Saanich actually has like 30 - 50 but it fluctuates more durastically as they on general are more the "actually seeking assistance" type of campers that are likely to find employment / housing of some sort. This is, of course, a generalization.

I'm curious to see how things progress at View Royal. Are those silly shuttles actually operating?

Know it all.

Tent City's Facebook page is a good read this morning. Lots of well-written and reasoned critique being posted on the page. The responses are generally mindless.

ugh me too. I'm starting to avoid going downtown because of all the sketchy people hanging around, they are literally everywhere. Thank god for malls. So long downtown!

. Mr. Mud and his girlfriend are on the computers quite often.

Interesting these people have access to library assets, considering you have to have proof of address with ID, official mail and whatever else to have a library card to use those computers.
