Are they only banned from shooting up in the washrooms because I've watched folks shoot up in their courtyard within the confines of their own fence...

** Disregard - VHF's post answers that one...

Indeed, here is part of one of those conversations:

Can't help suspecting that, in any other city, this would cause an outrage. But here, nobody would dare suggest that. We must be one of the dealer-friendliest cities in the country.

When my coworker got off the bus this morning just before 9, she noticed someone who appeared to be unconscious, lying in a doorway near Shoppers. Apparently his pants were so low down his behind was mostly exposed. And yet we dare not infringe on his rights and commit him somewhere.

...or dish out an indecent exposure charge...

"But our temporary overdose prevention site is changing that. We still don’t allow drug use inside our building, but by opening a place of dignity in response to this overdose crisis, our outreach workers are having meaningful dialogue with this incredibly vulnerable and stigmatized population."

Hmm. I agree that it is appropriate to treat addiction primarily as a health issue, and addressing the overdose crisis is necessary, but I reject the language of "a place of dignity." I think it is acceptable to consider shooting up drugs as an inherently undignified activity.

We certainly aren't providing cigarette smokers with any dignified locations to get their fix.

^ We also do not even let methadone users use the real part of the Shopper's pharmacy on Douglas, or the pharmacy across from Our Place.  They have a special side, unmarked door at Shopper's.  Lest people think less of Shopper's for providing the service, or letting this type of customer in the main doors.

I'd also argue that a better way to address the crisis would be to encourage treatment. Imagine if we had an epidemic of alcohol-related deaths and the response was to open up bars to address the issue. I am lucky enough not to know what it's like to be an addict but I'm sure it's a terrible hellish way to live. The fact that people seem to be encouraging people to stay addicted in any way, shape or form doesn't seem compassionate to me.

Not sure if you saw this message from Vicpd about the impact of the CCH/JSR on the neighborhood...

What is VicPD doing about issues in the 800-block of Pandora Ave?
Response:
VicPD has been working with the businesses in the 800-block of Pandora Ave over the past few weeks to come up with solutions regarding ongoing loitering and open drug dealing. Three videos were also posted online highlighting the issues that are affecting the area and were brought to the attention of our Community Services Section by one of our Reserve Constables.
A Community Resource Officer, using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Designs (CPTED) principles, assisted business in the area with ways to these address these problems. We are aware that fencing is going up, and we believe this will create some displacement. We will continue to work with the neighbouring businesses in the area to address these problems.
Members of the Community Services Division and Patrol division have made this area a priority and enforcement targeting the drug traffickers in the area has been occurring all week.
Our investigation is ongoing into the people in the videos. We always encourage people to report directly to our department with concerns or complaints regarding criminal activity by calling our non-emergency number at 250-995-7654.

Talk about Fake News...

The Adrian Chamberlain Ian Wicks story from 6 days ago has been cleansed from the TC website and social media channels.  Gone.

It lives on, on the OP website.

Can't blame the TC: They should be afraid of fraud accusations. They manipulated the truth, printed lies in order to raise funds for their Christmas fund. I think they still need to print an erratum. Imagine reading that article and as a result feeling compelled to open up your wallet and giving to the Christmas fund, then eventually finding out that 95% of that article was lies, that the journalist knew it,but the TC lrinted it anyway? I think I would sue.

Btw Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design is a fancy sounding way to essentially say this: cut down trees and bushes, put up fencing. Lovely. Thus punishing the neighborhour even more and ensuring that it remains gang land for ever more....

Yes, HB's videos made a massive impact. They're an embarrassment to this city, and that's a good thing.

I know that the videos and pictures have been circulated to many of the Hungry Hearts sponsors. Since most of the sponsors are national firms and have committed to the event this year, I doubt they will want the controversy of a last minute withdrawal of support. I'd bet though that the support won't continue unless there are major changes.

This morning:  Thanks for the raised flower beds, Lisa Helps.  Great place to shoot up.  Would not want to have to walk 43 steps to the safe consumption shack.

The reason I decided to film these scenes is that I wanted to shock people in decision making capacities to do something about it.

Seeing it this way forces people to see that there is an issue here. Its not words on a newspaper describing it and its not the local news broadcaster mentioning it with their smiley face on the 6pm news.

This is something that mainstream media is too scared to film, its not newsworthy to them perhaps because its normal.

I also thought it was important for people outside of the downtown core to see what is taking place.

I see elderly ,families, women, children, students and business men and women walking by these gauntlets filth and crime everyday.

I don't like having to walk past this stuff and really feel bad for others that are forced too as well.

This City needs to act ...they are so focused on bus lanes, bike lanes and public art that they are not seeing what this city has turned into

Lisa Helps is on CFAX each Friday afternoon for an open phone segment. I urge as many people as possible to take advantage of this opportunity to call her on it and interrogate her about what these video show. She has been pussy footing around the issue.  I know for certain that she has seen the videos

You photo shows that 2 fence posts have already been vandalized.

Some one should call Tower Fence and tell them to come get it before it gets picked up by someone and sold for scrap to fund the purchase of small rock of crack. the post was standing last night, when I was passing by at about 10pm

Yes, correct, 2 of them were down.  Bah, if they go missing Tower will just bill BC Housing for 2 new ones.
