Anyone notice the video billboard along HWY 14 attached to the Juan De Fuca Rec Centre's sign? It recently went up and every time I've driven past it I've seen advertisements for 3rd party products and businesses.

For all the brouhaha over the arena's sign, you'd think the media and anti-billboard locals would be concerned once again, but thus far it seems like there hasn't been a peep from anyone anywhere.

And remember the letters to the various local papers predicting accidents and traffic mayhem caused by the arena's sign?

That sign is still a butt-ugly eyesore, and makes a mockery of the artwork that it overshadows. I am no fan of this particular piece of art, but it's done no favours by having a sign 3 times its size so close to it. If I were the artist I would insist my work be moved - since I assume the sign isn't going anywhere (revenue generator).

Meh. It's a sign.

It was planned to be in that spot and at that scale from the start, so why Mowry Baden designed a tiny piece of art for the large space that was alloted to him is anyone's guess.

^ Good point (re. the art piece).

Also, good question re. why the Juan de Fuca Rec Ctr sign hasn't raised a fuss.

Victoria must be so special...

Speaking of billboards and signage, this Toronto group tracks "illegal" advertising signs and lobbies for their removal:

I wonder if there are any illegal signs in Victoria?

We are about 3 weeks of negotiating away from buying a $30k sign for our Caledonia marquee.

It'll be a better version of the brand new SJ Willis sign at Hillside and Blanshard.

No third-party advertising though. :)

There isn't any 3rd party advertising on the SOFMC billboard either :D

AFAIK, electronic signs still require a special permit in Victoria.

Permit is in hand. Cost: $450. It is going on an illuminated sign that was erected in the 70's, and they are somewhat grandfathered.

There are still a few old grandfathered signs. The huge backlit VanCity sign near Mayfair used to be Paul's Crown House restaurant.

The D-Tox hair salon on Hillside at Cedar Hill recently installed an animated text sign.

So, can someone explain to me why the second picture is morally/ ethically/ politically superior (as per illegalsigns.ca) to the first one?

I'm not opposed, principally, to Illegal Signs' agenda, but seriously: what's the point if the outcome is less interesting/ less attractive than the "illegal" approach?

The SOFMC billboard is on the fritz again.

You never saw this break down:

^That's not true, I remember that sign missing letters occasionally, although you could usually still make out what they were saying.

And your point was? Or as usual i'll bet you didn't have one.

Ms. B. Haven, given Toronto's demographics (youngish, socialist/liberal) I strongly suspect that Torontonians don't want their precious city to look anything like equally large American metropolis', thus they oppose things they see as representative of that. I'll bet it's the same kind of people (ie; nimby's) that want the Gardiner expressway dismantled. I can't imagine why anyone would prefer a bare black wall over what was there before but those are the kind of lunatics they are. I think i'll contact them and compliment them on the fine Orwellian work they are doing.

This is the message I sent them:

Subject: It's great to see someone upholding George Orwell's legacy!

Hi there,

It's so nice to see a group of people committed (and you certainly should be committed) to government micromanagement of every facet of the city because we just don't have enough laws! After all, what good do those horrid billboards do other than create work for people, give us something to look at (and talk about) and fill in gaps on bare walls because who doesn't prefer a nice bare wall? The nerve of those advertisers trying to make money, create jobs and stimulate the economy! How dare they!?!?!? I sure hope all your fine work pays off so that one day the government can create laws to tell us all where to go, what to do, what to say, and even how to say it.

Down with freedom of expression and freedom of speech!

I look forward to not hearing from you,

Carew

Getting back to the topic (finally!), people were right about the SOFA sign being really bright, but so what? It was just something else for people to whine about. What's more, why does anyone care what the sign says? I remember there being some deal when RG was proposing that sign that there was to be no third party advertising on the sign. I couldn't care less if they ran full screen 24-hour glowing advertisements promoting Jenna Jameson's latest celluloid outing. It sounds to me like the people that care about this stuff are the same kind of control freak lunatics that try to disassemble billboards in Toronto.

This was the response I got to my e-mail from that anti-billboard group in Toronto:

Okay, but why did you edit the word "die"? To cease to exist is consider profane now? "A-Hole" isn't offensive either. The Vatican would have permitted more than you.
