Victoria lost in a bid to host the Junos a few years ago but in 2013 the Island could be due to host. Councillor Coleman got a heads up recently that Victoria should apply again and he's been working on making it happen and as he mentioned to Council this morning the Vancouver event generated over $9 million in economic activity. It would likely be held at the SOFMC and affected stakeholders are interested.

The JUNOs...are those Canada's answer to the Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys or the Tonys? Does anyone actually watch this snooze-fest when it airs on TV? How much is it underwritten by the Canadian taxpayer? If it's not self-supporting I say scrap it.

Edit: Check this out: http://vancouver.ca/...sb1complete.pdf

As I imagined, in order to have the "priviledge" of hosting this awards ceremony, the host city must come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars itself. As a Victoria taxpayer I think we have more pressing concerns than hosting this event. In a city can't even afford to maintain its boulevards, this 3-day party for a very small group of musical elitists should not be a priority.

Hate to break it to you, Nparker, but all CanCon is heavily underwritten by the Canadian taxpayer. Even successful acts that don't need the subsidy. ;)

I knew this of course. I see no reason to add insult to injury by hosting this awards spectacle in an era when pressing social and infrastructure issues should be our primary concern.

Well if the money is going to be spent somewhere in Canada I would choose it to be here.

Think of the advertising of seeing the SOFMC on CBC television for 3 days. Sounds like a tourism windfall.

CLARIFICATION: Serious on first sentence - joking on second sentence.

I have no issues with any revenue generated by hosting this useless event, but I don't want a penny of my taxes being spent on "winning" the honours. The city has FAR more important places to spend our meagre budget.

A karaoke bar next to a Juno awards ceremony would likely do well out of this sort of thing one would think. Though bad Jann Aarden songs might be a bit scarey

Karaoke selection for Canadian artists is pretty dismal, unless they are world-wide stars like Barenaked Ladies etc. because the karaoke background (no lyrics) tracks are produced by studio musicians, not the original artists, and so it is a bit of an expensive proposition to produce one.

I don't know, conventions and events like this are the city's bread and butter. It seems prudent for the city to expend some effort and budget to attract them.

I'm not completely opposed to this. God knows I don't watch the Junos or care about them, particularly when Bryan Adams/Nickelback/some other god awful crap I never want to hear again keeps being declared Canada's best, but I get that sometimes you have to spend money to make money. What's the impact been on other host cities? Have local businesses seen increased activity and revenues? Has the city been able to recoup its costs?

I think they are a pretty big deal, especially in the last decade or so, when they have got lots of pre-hype from the like of E! Canada or ET Canada etc.

That'd be awesome!!! Maybe Chad Kroeger will get blitzed at my pub, get busted for drunk driving and then be forced to play the Game of Death that are the holding cells at VicPD HQ.

Or even better, I could punch him in the face for being so, so incredibly lame. Even lamer than how they came up with their name: http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Nickelback (for an even better laugh, scroll down to Criticism. "Are there any Nickelback fans out there? Are you sure?")

BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

The Juno awards are completely useless because they only represent the mainstream sellout bands which suck.

I really gotta say its interesting to read people's comments on here. I look through this thread and I look in various development or improvement threads, and when we talk about wasting money on "street beautification" many people are for it, but when we talk about bringing in name and revenue generating concerts and events, such as the Juno's, or commercially successful bands such as Nickleback (not saying I'm a fan, but they do deserve a certain amount of cudo's because through all the criticism they've gotten somewhere, and whats wrong with how they came up with a band name?...geez)everyone's against it? what gives, is it that age old cliche of Victoria true? we don't like progress, economic wealth, and developments/events that promote Victoria as a whole and individually?

- As for the Juno's, bring em in, the Juno's don't just represent mainstream sellout bands, they represent Canadian singers and song writers who not only in many cases provide excellent music and entertainment but they bring Canadian musicians and songwriters international recognition.

^Agree, Marcat. I don't watch the Junos or listen to Nickelback, but why not strive to host the Junos if, as you wrote, they "represent Canadian singers and song writers who not only in many cases provide excellent music and entertainment but they bring Canadian musicians and songwriters international recognition"? Seems like a no-brainer.

Thirded.

VicDuck, any artist or musician that claims there is only integrity in poverty is either (most likely) lying or insane so the whole concept of "selling out" is ridiculous. I believe it was James Hetfield who was once asked if Metallica sold out after the commercial success of the black album and he said, "Yeah we sold out. Every night we sell out."

Nparker, I agree that the junos should be self-supporting and while we're at it, let's eliminate CanCon and make the CBC self-supporting. The taxpayer shouldn't be on the hook for any of those things.

If the Juno's truly do bring international recognition to Canadian musicians and songwriters, then they and those who profit from that recognition can fund the Juno's themselves. If they don't find it worth doing, then there is no need to force our family, friends, and neighbours to contribute if they don't want to.
