A new paint job for the new restaurant going into the Cabin 12 location. Looks like "The Cottage" is planning a summer opening?image.jpeg image.jpeg

Inverting the building must have cost a fair sum of money. I wonder if this innovation will help attract customers?

This is to become a family Cafe with a large play area. Like Crumsby in Estevan but triple the size. I talked to the owner and she will have an ECE supervised playground in addition to seating for parents to enjoy a meal. Also possible drop in daycare. They own the Applebox on Cook st.

I agree. ECEs should be paid much more than $15/hour.

Let me get this straight. It's a restaurant filled with shrieking children?

You mean you don't think alienating potential customers with the most disposable income in favour of those who are the most frugal is a good business model?

Edit: though there are a couple places like this around (Tumblebums in Langford) I just don't think there's much of a market for this kind of thing.

I think your wrong. Don't underestimate the power of moms that want to get out with their little ones and go eat somewhere. Most places if a child/baby makes any noise, dirty looks are thrown the parent's way. A place where kids can be kids might not apeal to the older male population of Victoria, but for moms it could be a little haven where they can get a bite to eat, some mommy juice or caffeine, and let their little one play safely. I for one know I will see this place on my credit card statement as my wife gets out with our newborn. The hardest thing for moms is to take time to feed themselves when all the energy is focused on providing for their hungry little monsters. I would be surprised if they didn't do well...

My impression is that Tumblebums is a play place and toy store, not a place to eat, although it does have some snack items. Crumsby's does very well. I think two challenges for this place will be the size and the location.

Cabin 12 did ok for a while, with its varied clientele of hung-over college kids, senior church folk, Saanich hipsters, tradesmen on lunch break and neighbors who became loyal regulars.

But the kiddie concept slashes your customer base. As if The Gap eliminated all their clothing stock except maternity wear. You have to cast a far wider customer net to make up the deficit. Because if you're looking for a caffeine and bacon-fuelled morning antidote to a night of boozing it up you are likely to steer clear of a place where you are guaranteed to encounter a surprisingly loud three year-old who vehemently insists that walking home barefoot in the snow is a perfectly reasonable idea.

Or teenagers, university students, single people who don't want to seem like perverts, child-free people of all ages, seniors without grandchildren, tourists, or anyone looking for a clean, quiet environment to have a coffee and a snack. I'm not saying it can't work, I'm saying it's a huge investment in a weird area of town for a very niche clientèle. But if it gets unruly children and their parents out of pubs, more power to them.

Crumsby's has been in business for many years with a very child friendly vibe.

Cabin 12's problem was that it sucked...

As a mom with young kids, i think you under estimate the potential in this space! Many of us need/want more places to meet where our kids can play. There are a LOT of us and a lot of moms that support her original business. It will be a destination but one that i think, if they have done things right, moms will flock to.

Daycares are free to charge, and pay staff, all they want.
