Farmers just take their oil from the ground. No need to go into town.

VHF what did your dad do after he changed the oil in his car when you were a kid? It probably all went down the storm drain. I'm pretty sure I remember being told to pour paint down the storm drain before I knew better. That was where you disposed of liquid things you didn't want. Especially things that the lady of the house didn't want mucking up the sinks.

It's all about dilution. Ten litres of motor oil into the drain is tiny once it mixes with billions of billions of litres of sea water.

Just for clarity, dumping motor oil is a chargeable offense, and if you do so you may be subject to fines and/or jail time. Also known as idiot tax.

Nah, only if you get caught ... and I only dump my oil at night (when it's dark out) when there's nobody around, and usually try to scootch it so it runs towards my neighbors house ... so I'm good to go

But now that I know you're an "oil cop", I'll have to be even more crafty!! (maybe start wearing a disguise or some such clever undertaking).

You realize that every farmer on every farm in North America still does this ... right?

I mean, do you think they drive into town 130 miles away to recycle the oil at the local oil recycling center?

Yet the world still turns.

The world will "turn" regardless of whether we delete ourselves from its ecosystem too ;)  This isn't about the world but us living in it.

I've always maintained that the Second Law of Thermodynamics ensures that the world will wear out completely, as will everything in it - including us.

Whether that happens before the Sun expands and swallows us up, I don't know ... but either way pouring some oil in a rocky hole probably won't make much difference one way or the other.

BUT, despite my attempt at humor above, I don't actually change my own oil - rather I have my local 10 Minute Lube and Oil shop do it ... and they recycle, so I'm still definitely good to go.

My point was the world is going to turn regardless of how badly we ruin our environment for ourselves. We can either maintain our ecosystem well, using the knowledge we know about now after many years of scientific observation and research, or cr*p where we eat :P

More in the ongoing saga...

Saanich has hired a consultant from Vancouver to review the bylaw. They seem to be doing a competent job. Last week they held an open house, to present what they had gathered as issues over the past few months.

Info that was presented at the open house is here: https://static1.squa...s_FORONLINE.pdf

The survey is here if you care to provide feedback: https://www.surveymo...m/r/saanichedpa

This was just forwarded to me, taken from an email from SCRES:

SCRES has been overwhelmed with emails from many of you expressing that you found the Diamond Head survey unsatisfactory, confusing, biased, doesn’t address the issues, and is not helpful in moving forward. Many of you feel Saanich staff must have had a hand in creating the survey. While it may have that appearance with the “Status Quo or More Stringent EDPA, there is no evidence that staff have been involved in anyway. There is also concern with how late in the day this survey is being done. The survey closes one week before Diamond Head is to have their draft report to council.

In the Terms of Reference for the Diamond Head review, it states “To provide recommendations to Council to improve the EDPA Bylaw and support private land stewardship of Environmentally Significant Areas in Saanich.” Stewardship is not mentioned in the survey.

Two of the biggest issues in the present EDPA are bad mapping and delegated authority to staff – these have not been addressed in the survey.
The issue of Saanich Parks not being maintained and restored, despite the fact that they contain 52 % of the ESAs mapped in Saanich is not addressed at all in the questionnaire. This is the real part of Leading by Example. Significant resources need to be applied to this issue and the landowner stewardship issue, by Saanich Council.

SCRES cannot recommend answers to any of the survey questions for all the reasons you have told us. You may wish to just add your own comments for each of the questions or skip the survey questions and just provide Diamond Head your reason for not answering the questions. You may also want to let Mayor and Council know how you feel about the survey. The most important thing is that you and each adult in your household provide some response. https://www.surveymo...m/r/saanichedpa

SCRES believes Council needs to consider repealing the bylaw and then rebuilding it from the ground up with full consultation, involvement of landowners and other stakeholders, scientists, etc. to create a scientifically defensible, achievable bylaw and stewardship actions that are supported by the majority of people in Saanich.

No, no.  Just keep the rules the same as they are but only apply them when you know there is sensitive ecosystem, not the reverse-onus cheap-out method Saanich started with.

here's a fun video of Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell, explaining to the crowd how public pressure is required to get the bylaw (that he is supposed to be in charge of) changed. Pledging to represent the views of the people at the table who have educated him.

https://youtu.be/T04G5fKT78k?t=1h9m59s

The lady talking at the start is Anita Bull, President of SCRES. The two guys sitting at the table are Ted Lea, the biologist who has been active with the group, and Peter Lewis.

Killed by 5-4 vote yesterday.

New councillor Harper sides with kill.

With Derman still in, this would have gone the other way.
