There's Montreal smoked meat (generic, sometimes boil-in-a-bag) and there's Schwartz's.
If its the real deal the meat should be almost purple colour and peppery.

The TC article says he uses Schwartz's.

This place could catch on. Victoria has been cranking out good little eateries lately.

Oh seriously? Then it's easily worth $9.00.

It would be pretty much $9 at Schwartz's now, but you get the nonpareil decor (arborite tables and hard chairs) plus surly waiters and noise in the price.

Nope, $5.50 - I looked it up. And I'll take Schwartz's "nonpareil decor (arborite tables and hard chairs) plus surly waiters and noise" over an antiseptic modern box any day of the week.

$9 for a sandwich is extremely expensive considering the Italian place a block over sells a large sandwich for $5.

Bob,
Excellent value then. I haven't been there for more than 10 years so figured it would be up around $9 now.
Agree about the decor and ambience 100%.
Now, where can I get a good 50/50, smoked meat and chopped liver, plate of Mrs. Whyte's on the side?:)

$9 for a sandwich only with no side is pretty expensive, especially if its for take out. There are lots of places in Victoria that sell very good fresh sandwiches for around $5

The kosher Coke (in bottles, not plastic) from Montreal is interesting too.

Anyone checked this joint out? Is the smoked meat any good? I walked by to check it out but it is tiny and lacked the ambience so I just kept on walking......

I was having some work done at a local AV install shop, and was regaled with a tale re: their experience with Lully's.

He too, a former Montrealer, was ecstatic to hear about Schwartz's smoked meat being served out here. He went to Lully's, picked up 3 sandwiches for himself and his co-workers (they come with a koshur pickle, from what I understand).

$27.50 later, he was off back to his shop. When they opened up the bag, they found three tiny, thin sandwiches that were about 1/2 of what you'd get at Schwartz's. He said they looked as apologetic as he felt for buying such a small lunch. He did, however, state that it tasted perfect.

That's disapointing.:( It is just not right unless it's piled an inch high.

Perhaps some competition by someone offering the same ingredients, piled high, at a cheaper cost would make a killing.

Hey anyone interested in a Schwartz's franchise?

This might be a bit off topic, but I remember a single serving of "corned beef" in a plastic envelope that would be placed in a pot of boiling water bag and all. I have not seen this product for a long time. It probably was a health risk. Has anyone seen this lately?

An inch high in Montreal and they would be out of business in 2 days.
Got to be two and a half at least!
Impossible to do a Schwartz's franchise. To replicate it you'd have to be in business since 1912.

Ate those when I was a kid, got them in the supermarket. Chief purveyor in Montreal was Coorsh. It was crap. I think Shopsy's in T.O. did the same. Crap, too, I suspect.

Coorsh, that was it. That must have been the most unhealthy food on the market. Thanks Yod
