Remember - how did people travel and 'vacation' in the 1950's? How did they actually get around from point A to point B? By car. Or rail.
Only the uber-wealthy cruised - and at that on true oceanic liners since the Caribbean and Alaskan 'cruise' industries were in their infancy; ditto for jet aircraft which were a novelty for most people in the 50's and early 60's. Heck we travelled to Nova Scotia to visit family 6 times between 1964-90 and took the train on four of those trips. I believe it wasn't until 1977 when we actually flew the entire family back east for the first time.
IMO "traveler's" inns like the Tally Ho etc., have simply been bypassed by all those other locomotory options, including RV'ing, which is also tremendously popular these days.

Agreed. Today's travellers either want luxury (5-star hotels/resorts, cruises) or self-reliance (i.e. RV-ing/camping); the moderately priced "motor hotels" of yesteryear don't really have a purpose today...

Don't forget about the impacts of Air BnB, VRBO, etc.

Why would you rent a two star room at the Tally Ho when you can rent a newer condo downtown for about the same amount?

Which pretty much describes us/me to a tee: 5-star AI's in MX and the Caribbean especially when the kidlin' was younger to ensure a superior vacation experience in addition to access to reasonable emergency or medical facilities if needed, "camping" and roughing it when with the boys fishing on the BC Coast and Rocky Mountains; the last time we did anything resembling a "cabin" experience was at Tofino 4 years ago and at that it was one of their nicer resorts.
Offhand the last time I did a motel/traveler inn was 2 years ago in Campbell River with two of my BFF's on a fishing trip to the Campbell and Quinsam Rivers; C-R has built up an entire cottage industry with a series of fisherman's motels along the river expressly for that purpose. Before that stayed in something similar in Cache Creek when dad took me and my grandfather on a fishing/camping trip to the Interior in about 1968....

Bins have been spotted outside of the hotel. It looks like the renovation is starting.
Know it all.

I sort of wish it was getting the Saanich Roadhouse renovation treatment.

I saw them today but I have not seen any signs of a tender call yet.

^ The Temporary Use Permit is still being reviewed by the City. The letter from City Spaces indicates that they are hoping for occupancy in December, and then redevelopment of the property starting Spring 2019. Rezoning would be required.

...Is the renovation substantial?
Not nearly as substantial as the physical changes that will take place once the new residents move in.

Its a slash and dash. New flooring, new entrance configuration, fire sprinklers, security cameras, pool gets filled in etc. Not much really

Is it terrible of me to want to refer to the future residents of this location as "Tally Ho's"?

In 2009, 71 percent of all sheltered individuals were adult men and only 25 percent were adult women staying alone. ... By comparison, adults who become homeless together with children are usually, but not always, women. In 2009, 79.6 percent of adults in families with children were women.

I am pretty sure men can "ho" themselves out too, but probably not so much the future denizens of the T-H
