My virtual "office hours" in VV begin right now! As a newly elected municipal councillor, I will be making myself available to the residents, businesses and organizations of Central Saanich and beyond to hear your concerns, field your questions and hopefully shed some light in another arena to promote some of the initiatives and activities coming forward in CS and on the Saanich Peninsula.

My phone # and email are available below so that you can contact me directly, but I will also be keeping an eye on this thread going forward so that the residents of VV will have the ability to reach out to me for discussions on these threads.

If you have any questions for me going forward please post them here as opposed to the 2011 Municipal Elections Thread as I want to ensure I am not missing anything. I look forward to continue the dialogue going forward that I began with you all pre-Nov!

Phil, I have to admit that I had to "call a friend...well...google" first for a definition as I have never heard that term before. I think if you were to speak with me, or speak to anybody whom has spoken to me, I think you would find my style of politics, at least the first two months of experience that I have with it, more collaborative and that is a trend that I see myself carrying forward.

I believe that we as a municipality will be much more effective working with the residents and the businesses as opposed to against them, wherever possible.

As for my "namesake" in OB, have not yet met the man, but I am sure our paths will cross at some point going forward.

This will be interesting. I have 2 observations based on my 25 years of working in CS, nothing will happen about this and the Keating interchange will be shelved for further study and comments from the Province for yet another decade......shame really as there is so much opportunity for improvements to Keating which would bring so many local jobs for many residents of CS and surrounding areas....not to forget the massive increase to the tax base which in turn would help preservation of the Agri/rural areas....

Comments Carl?

It sounds like you the right idea to be very good at politics. Collaboration in an effort to try to be all things to all people is the name of the game these days.

Phil, are you even aware that in almost every post you add, you're on the attack? Belittling people, insulting them, purposefully poking at them. Just let up a little.

That gets you a -1 from DF, for using 5 words when 3 will do: "...in the future." I think that he'd call it waffle!

@rjag - I did speak in support of this initiative this evening at Council for the following reasons:
  • Keating revitalization and particularly the main stretch of Keating X Rd has been a major concern for the residents of the community
  • I believe Keating is an integral part of CS for 3 reasons: 1) A source of employment for CS residents; 2) A source of goods and services for CS residents; and 3) A source of municpal revenue that can potentially benefit from a potential large anchor tennant for the Business Park
  • During the campaign I spoke to businesses in Keating that were in support of something like this for the potential of an increased customer base that could benefit them as neighbouring businesses
  • I would like to see us remove potential barriers to see what businesses might come forward
  • Finally, I would like to see this subject go to a Public Hearing where we can hear what both the residents and businesses of CS have to say on the issue
@ North Shore - Have to admit that your comments were initially puzzling...that was until I realized that you may be referring to the teachings of my Grade 10 English teacher in Vancouver...if that were the case, you've got me! But if not, then I am confused again and I need a hint on who DF might be?

Thank you Carl, now lets see how far it gets. This is a good first step in the right direction to improve Keating and the CS tax base. Lets just hope the nimby's are in the minority as its their kids that would benefit from increased job opportunities etc.

Gumgum, thank you for your comments. I'm not being sarcastic either. Thank you. It's about time somebody around here had the balls to stand up to me.

I wasn't actually attacking Carl though. What I was doing was attacking the current zeitgeist of politics in Canada today-a system that at the very least, discourages leaders with it's insistence on things like "collaboration" and "consensus". Anyone dare come up with an idea of how to improve things these days that isn't popular they will be destroyed at the polls and drummed out of office even if it is best for society. A mindset like this creates a vacuum in leadership which is exactly what we have in Canada today-leaders that follow us via polls because we don't dare let them lead due to some perverse notion of democracy. Carl's comment about "collaboration" merely reminded me of this. I harbor no ill-will towards Carl and like I said, I think he may be well-suited for the job given the current state of politics in Canada.

I'll have to miss it but I'm sure the discussion will be lively and will be interesting for those who like planning issues. Remember folks, when it comes to densification, it's either build up or out.

Attended the Open House last Saturday for the RDS. The consultants did several presentations to those in attendance and fielded a number of questions after each presentation. At the end, small focus groups were held with representatives of the development community to seek out their input.

Should be very interesting to see the final report with all inpur from residents and developers. Will still be an opportunity going forward for your voice to be heard when a survey is placed on the CS site. Not there yet, but survey will be posted soon along with video of the consultant presentation for those not able to attend.

I had a number of conversations with some of the residents in attendance. Thanks to all that came out to be part of the dialogue.

The owner of Portside Marina is holding a public Open House tomorrow night, Thu Feb 23, at the Brentwood Lodge between 7-8:30 to discuss their proposal with the public.

It's a great chance to see what they are proposing and to provide some valuable feedback on what is being proposed.

Thanks for the heads up. Once the news is revealed we can create a thread for the project.

@Mike K - The concept has been around at least since last fall to the best of my knowledge, and the idea has been revived just this year.

Probably wouldn't hurt to start a thread on it to start some dialogue on the proposal as I would be very interested to hear comments from some of the neighbours to get a hood sense of what the community as a whole is thinking of the idea.

Couple of articles on the proposal:

The CS site for the Residential Densification Study has been updated and it now includes the presentation from the Open House as well as feedback forms:

http://www.centralsa..._Open_House.htm

The site also includes an online survey regarding the RDS:

http://www.surveygiz...on-Study-Survey

Your thoughts and opinions on the survey will help to drive the dialogue. Thanks!
