Subway - Blanshard & Fort

We were looking for a quick, inexpensive lunch yesterday, just after 1pm.

We both got the $5.50 lunch special to eat in.

Found a table, it was very dirty with sticky pop, olives, lettuce etc, the chairs were a bit dirty too. I asked the cashier if I could have a cloth to clean the table; he gave me a few paper napkins.

Wow! So a polite message to the management there; if a customer indicates a table needs cleaning, please have an employee come and wipe the table. There were at least 4 staff members there, and the shop was not busy.

The subs were very good, but a bit more initiative or training may be in order.

You just have the walk the extra couple blocks to the location at Fort/Cook. Sunil and Sunrun run a tight ship. Best Subway in town.

My experience with most Subway locations is that they get cleaned once a day whether they need it or not.

Does anyone else find the smell outside of this particular Subway overwhelmingly nauseating? I don't mind Subway sandwiches, but whatever is wafting out of those vents makes me never want to eat again. On the plus side, great for my diet.

All Subway stores exude the same awful smell. Big turnoff for me...

If you've ever stepped into an industrial proofer you'll recognize the smell. It's very unpleasant.

All Canadian Subways increases prices by 7% in light of the Ontario minimum wage hike.

That makes no sense. If prices are going to increase whenever the minimum wage goes up then how are low income earners ever going to get ahead?

That's what many advocates against higher minimum wages have been saying... It's just inflationary.

Thats the part that the left dont want to talk about. Politicians have mastered the art of unintended consequences.

These businesses are low margin and cant absorb these increases so quickly. Over 5 years it may not be as bad, but 1-2 years to increase wage costs by 20-30% is simply not manageable without adjustments. I bet we will see less part timers and more full timers, less staff to cover shifts and fewer opening hours.

End result, the virtue signalers will claim victory and ignore the uptick in youth unemployment

The government has guaranteed itself a nice income tax windfall by raising that minimum, that's for sure. At the end of the day businesses will pay more for labour, customers will pay more for products and services, and government will earn more in taxes.

It's a win-win for Wynne, but not so much for the workers in her province...

Not only are they inflationary, but they reduce the number of employed people. Customers don't magically purchase more Subway sandwiches or whatever because the minimum wage went up, so business owners have to adjust the expense side of the equation.

This is the stuff they taught us in high school economics. I guess Wynne didn't take that class.

No windfall when payrolls shrink.

These national chains with national price advertising are very challenged with these increases.

Oh, she took the class. But she knows most of her constituents did not. And she has weighed the economic reality vs. The sound bite PR of the increases. The latter gets more votes than the former.

Employers just drop hours and offer more part-time work, they don't necessarily fire employees or hire less. Full-time comes with added expenses and as wages rise full-time opportunities go with them, so if anything more jobs are created, but the total take-home per worker is less.

Not only do payrolls shrink or stay the same, but if the payroll does increase that simply means businesses are making less taxable income and thus paying less income tax. Minimum wage earners are paying very little income tax, anyway.

Yeah, I doubt the government comes out ahead here at all. There may be a very small increase in their income tax take, but that'll easily be offset by lower take from corporate taxes etc.
