It smacks of desperation.

Has anyone advised the mayor of this? Desperation is kinda her thing.

The only thing Swans has going for it is that it's a short walk when the Drake is full.

The glassed in patio has to go and be replaced with a more inviting outdoor one. Not like they need the extra seats lately, and who wants to sit in a greenhouse?

Yates Street Taphouse also needs to get rid of theirs. Dated, old, moldy and ugly. But enough about me..

New paint job - pastels finally out of style.  Let's hope the flower baskets come back in the spring.

I doubt they will - the metal holders were removed earlier this year, likely as they intruded onto the already limited sidewalk space.

Flower baskets, or pots I guess on the windows, as shown here.

Vast improvement, and looks ultra sexy next to the Janion.

The inside renos are awful - they took out the best part (the alcove that was to the right of the old entrance as you went in; for many years my go-to place), moved the entrance, and turned the old alcove, entry hall, and restaurant/private-party section into a sort of ugly unappealing stand-up bar area.

Thus far they've left the rest of it alone I think, though it's been a while since I stopped in.  The glassed-in patio should be melded with the pub itself somehow - punch out the intervening walls where they can and just leave whatever support is required to hold the building up.

There a sign on the door of Swans that says closed for renovations, reopening March.

According to the building permit, they'll be removing portions of two non-structural partition walls near the kitchen entrance

Stopped in there the other night - massive increase in their beer selection (as in, they offer much more than just their own brews now) which is good, but all the tall stool seating and counters rather than actual chairs and tables left me rather underwhelmed.

Referring to one of Myfanwy Pavelic's famous Trudeau paintings.

I wonder if Williams would reconsider his gift to UVic knowing that one day his beloved art collection would be pulled from his flagship property. At least I don't see any TVs.

Yesterday the Michael Williams statue had a giant construction cone on its head. The thing was easily 2’ tall. And of course, tourists were having a great time with that visual.

The lesson here is that what organizations really want is your money with no strings attached, and whatever legacy you might have wanted preserved is only as good as the ironclad will you’ve got drafted and the willingness of the recipient to follow through.

Know it all.
