I had to drop someone off at the airport this morning and had the opportunity snap a couple of photos. This building is absolutely huge. The photos do not do the size justice.

^ This is a federal project. There will be a year or two of transition while they perform inspections, detail deficiencies, and stock it up with toilet paper.

Then they will have to locate the personnel that will occupy it so they can figure out what to do with it and contemplate why they built it in the first place.

Meanwhile, these new machines will just have to float around until it's finished.

The fire suppression system in this place is a reusable foam, it's pretty impressive, I think the whole place can be filled in like 3 minutes or something crazy like that

They will be poured with concrete. That is the "RAMP" for the Helicopters.

That's where they bury the Sea Kings.

The concrete is so thick they pour it like that so that it cures a little faster and provides the forms for the other pours.

I was out there yesterday. Looks like it is almost complete. Parking lot is paved and all construction trailers have been moved to the field to the west. Very impressive compared to the old WWII hangar and 50's brick building they were stuffed in.

Ottawa finalizes revised contract to deliver Cyclones, retire Sea Kings

OTTAWA - The Harper government formally signed a deal Wednesday to amend its contract with the U.S. manufacturer of the long-delayed CH-148 Cyclone maritime helicopters, The Canadian Press has learned.

The agreement with Sikorsky Aircraft — a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) — paves the way for the retirement next year of Canada’s outdated fleet of Sea King choppers, said multiple defence and government sources.

One senior defence official said the Cyclones — a military version of Sikorsky’s S-92 helicopter — are expected to be delivered throughout 2015 and should begin flying limited operational missions from warships in early 2016.

As many as six pilots are already qualified to fly the aircraft, four of which have been parked at the military air base in Shearwater, N.S., near Halifax. Training is expected to ramp up once the new choppers are delivered.

The new facility is to officially open 23 October

Here is a picture of the now (pretty much) completed facility. A massive jump in capability from the old Hangar and Office Building.

Here we go again with the tail wagging the dog. Now that the $155-million hanger for the much anticipated Cyclone helicopters is completed, we have the local resident concerned about the noise that will be generated. The residents want to have an assessment before the helicopters move in.

An environmental assessment on noise should have been completed, but was never done, said retired provincial judge Ben Casson, who lives on Curteis Point in North Saanich near the airport.

A proper assessment requires public meetings — something that has not happened — and a broader consultation, Casson said. Exercises, particularly when helicopters are hovering, already disturb the community, he said. Cyclones are “bigger and they are louder,” Casson said. “It’s going to be an around-the-clock operation for sure.” New helicopters should go first to Shearwater, the centre of naval aviation in Canada, while this matter is examined, Casson said. He isn’t alone. A group called the Concerned Citizens Against Airport Noise has formed, said member John Kafka, also president of the North Saanich Residents Association.

North Saanich Mayor Alice Finnall said noise from military helicopters, “comes up as a regular issue.”

The municipality and the airport authority do not have control over operations of these helicopters, she said.

Weren't these people living there in 1939 when the airport was created for military use?
