54 year-old Stan Peterec is planning an event this summer at RAP. In it, he himself will be attempting to become the second North American to win recognized fights in five consecutive decades (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's). If he succeeds he'll join Roberto Duran and Jack Johnson.

Should be fun.

Even more unexpected is that the 48-year-old kickboxer and the owner of a gym in his name on Fisgard Street is ranked the fourth toughest man on the planet.

"It's embarrassing really," says Peterec of the ranking in Black Belt magazine earlier this year. Black Belt bills itself as world's leading magazine of self-defence.

"It's just what I need," says Peterec, a former World Kickboxing Association light middleweight champion, rubbing his hands down his face.

"I would be OK with it if it said fourth most knowledgeable person about martial arts, but this? I'm really not putting too much stock into it [the ranking]."

The magazine story comes at an interesting period in Peterec's life.

It's called age and the realization that it's creeping up on him -- fourth toughest man on Earth or not.

Peterec says he had always dreamed of fighting in the ring until he was 50. His last fight was six years ago. It was a knockout in an ultimate fighting event.

Who won, Peterec is asked.

"Me," he responds, sounding surprised the question was necessary.

Peterec was hoping to make a comeback Sunday at the King of the Ring event he is organizing and promoting at Bear Mountain Arena, but thought the better of it. Between running his martial arts gym, training students and promoting Sunday's card, Peterec hasn't had much time to think about fighting, or at least his fighting.

It's this Saturday, probably the biggest fight in Victoria history.

He might look like a 53-year-old but Stan Peterec fought like a 33-year-old as he defeated 35-year-old Tracy Huber at Summer Slugfest on Saturday night.

Peterec used his legendary left leg to attack right from the start and it was too much for Huber, with Peterec taking the win after five two-minute rounds.
