I found an article that stated that Torquay Place led to De Sousa Place...

That makes sense. Before Torquay Place takes a bend and leads into that townhouse project, that area off to the left right smack middle here was ripe for development.

Here is the street view complete with ongoing construction.

Man stabbed to death in Saanich. Looks like a domestic.

EDIT: Yes, it's the 17-year-old son in custody. That's pretty awful.

Re: Lindsay Buziak, De Sousa is right off Torquay Drive. It's in the stretch between Kenmore Road and Llandaff. I think the house in question is the first one on the left as you drive in.

Pulled-over Hummer speeds off with door still open
http://www.timescolonist.com/news/Pu...517/story.html
Times Colonist February 5, 2010

Three Saanich police officers narrowly escaped injury after a grey Hummer was pulled over near Tillicum Mall on Tuesday evening. Police say a white powder that they believed to be cocaine or heroin was visible inside the vehicle. When police attempted to arrest the two occupants, however, the driver hit the gas while the driver-side door was still open, nearly running down an officer as the vehicle sped away, running stop signs. Police later located the vehicle, but it was empty. Both occupants were arrested the next day.

Starting to sound like there was a horrible miscommunication that night (http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Vic...859/story.html):

A source close to the investigation said the teen was hearing voices and the family went to Royal Jubilee’s emergency department Thursday night to see an emergency room physician. After waiting hours, they returned home without being admitted, the person said.
However, according to Vancouver Island Heath Authority spokeswoman Shannon Marshall, the teen was seen immediately and referred to the adjacent Archie Courtnall Centre, a psychiatric emergency and stabilization centre. Medical staff at the centre were informed about the referral and were waiting, but the family never showed up.

^ Golly, that is awful. But we should maybe not jump to conclusions, I think mental illness and its effects are kind of hard to predict, and 99.9% of times episodes don't end up in the death or even injury of anyone.

A News had an interview with schoolmates that said the suspect was not quite the most mainstream type of individual, but did not attract any trouble, or any bullying at all.

Police arrived to the north-end Victoria home within minutes to find the victim suffering from life-threatening wounds.
Huh? North end of what?

"I" is the location of the incident:

I've got a couple of good friends who live within 5 houses either side - ugh.

The mental illness aspect is the worst - if the kid was hearing voices and they were telling him to do something, then....

The other thing that's going to get attention is how they apparently were sent to Archie Courtnall, but apparently misheard and went home instead.

Tragic

It is tragic. Breaks my heart.
This just after the suicide as well.
It is also not easy to get help or for many to spot troubled kids.
Hindsight is 20/20.

We have to get a handle on this whole Aspergers/Autism/Bipolar thing because we're losing way too many smart, great kids.

Exactly. The Victoria Youth Empowerment Society which has a mental health councilor who will work with kids for early identification of mental illness, take kids who are really having issues into supervised care, provides youth detox, and also the Alliance Club - a safe place for youth at risk to hang out, is suffering funding cuts. Already the Youth Hospitality Training Program that gave youth at risk a sense that they might be able to cope with the world by helping them get job skills and employment has been closed due to losing federal funding.

But it is not just VYES. Services for youth are being cut around the City. Thinking about how much crises intervention the workers there do, I expect any cut backs to be reflected in an increase in tragedies.

That said, if anyone does know of a kid who is struggling, they should know that the core programs are still there, and there is a helping hand available to families. If you are worried about a youth, read up on what YES and other Youth oriented organizations provide and pass on the contact info. You might save a life.

I'm wondering what happened there, too, and who is more accurately reflecting the chain of events, the parents or VIHA. At any rate, something went seriously wrong.

I'll tell you one thing that I would criticize in the local approach to teen mental health: it's very difficult to get a psychiatrist here. The psychiatric care that is available seems to come from practitioners who are more oriented toward treating substance abuse, which doesn't necessarily apply to kids suffering from psychosis, depression, anxiety disorders, etc.

I first heard this complaint from my family doctor. She was quite dismissive about the options available, if you have a kid who is troubled but drug-free, since (according to what she said) mental health for teens is geared toward addressing drug abuse.

Again, I have to add that this was my doctor's opinion, not my own from experience with the mental health system. But just anecdotally, it does seem to me that we don't have a tradition of sending kids to the shrink here, the way parents do much more readily in the US. We only seem to get around to it once the youngster is clearly psychotic or has a drug addiction.

Drug addiction is such a bug-a-boo and there's a lot of light shining on it, media-wise, so perhaps it's natural that the mental health providers also seem focused on it.

But as the recent tragedies involving (apparently drug-free) teens indicate, you don't need to abuse drugs to develop a mental illness.

^You're right. It is very hard to find psychiatrists for children in this town. I think the wait-list is pretty staggering too.
As of April 1st there will not be a psychiatrist at Child and Youth Mental Health either. Not sure how that works.
Usually the drug abuse (if any) comes from self-medicating untreated mental illness.
Now every time I turn around I hear of more cuts and layoffs. Contracts not being renewed etc. We are going to be in deep deep trouble.

I find it quite disturbing that there are two completely different stories concerning the latest tragedy. I just can't see how this is possible.
I'm honestly more inclined to think VIHA is covering it's ass.

Saanich police use Taser, baton, pepper spray and dog to subdue naked man
TC FEBRUARY 8, 2010
http://www.vancouversun.com/life/Saa...s+/+Vancouver)

Quote:
The first officer on the scene used the baton but backed off when it had no effect and drew his gun as what police say was a self-defence measure. The officer holstered his gun when a second policeman arrived. The two were unable to control the man, despite using physical methods and pepper spray.

The second officer deployed his dog but police say they were still unable to control the man. A third officer arrived and deployed his Taser when the man charged him

This was the good part:

I would venture to say, it is hard to get a psych assessment here regardless of age. In my experience as an advocate, it takes a crisis situation, such as self harm. Drug use/mental illness is considered a crisis. Until you deal with any use, you don't know if the illness is brought on by a drug psychosis and can be resolved by detox, abstaining and treatment, or if there is a brain disorder/ disease, or both. Determining drug use, if any, is the first line of defense.

For example, the drug psychosis of a crystal meth user mimics symptoms of schizophrenia. The typical age of schizophrenic onset for males, who statistically show signs earlier than females, is teenage years- also the age of experimentation...not far off to consider drugs as a potential trigger, in any case.

Considering his Dx already, I hope a concurrent Dx for schizophrenia is not the case for this young man. It is a horrible disease, and he has a terrible burden already.

The rate of Rx drugs kids state side are prescribed is a disturbing trend. The youth may have more psych access south of the border, but pharma seems to be the #1 that is benefiting.

Victoria woman assaulted with a hammer by man in pickup truck
By Cindy E. Harnett, Times Colonist February 12, 2010
http://www.timescolonist.com/news/Vi...#ixzz0fNgpFHwa
A Victoria sex-trade worker was viciously assaulted with a hammer Friday morning before she was able to escape her attacker.

At about 3:40 a.m. Friday the woman was picked up at the intersection of Government and Pembroke streets by a man driving an old model Ford Ranger pickup truck, said Victoria Police Sgt. Darren Laur.

The sex-trade worker was assaulted immediately upon getting into the vehicle. Somehow she was able to escape and the suspect sped away.[...]
